Atlanta (by the way of London) Algiers returned to the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, last night, March 29th.

Opening the show was Sydney’s Party Dozen, a sax & drums duo (saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and percussionist Jonathan Boulet). You don’t get too many sax-led bands… in fact, the last double sax & drum band we saw was Moon Hooch in 2016, and they were a blast.

Party Dozen was a lot of fun, it was their first time in Minneapolis. It was unbearably cold for them, yet, they were still extremely grateful for Algiers to “take a chance on this ol’ sax & drum band.”

They played their hearts out in a darkened room with occasional bulb flashes… even if Kirsty’s sax mic wasn’t working (they admitted they didn’t do soundcheck earlier). Still, everyone loved their energy… and I know for a fact that they made some newfound fans in Minneapolis when they lined up to buy their CDs.

Songs on their set included “Fruits of Labor” and their ‘theme’ song “Party Dozen”. “A little too much party dozen in your party dozen,” someone joked.

The highlight of their set was “Macca the Mutt”, a song featuring Nick Cave on sample. Kirsty adds, “I’m sorry Nick Cave can’t be here tonight.”

You can hardly hear Cave, as the vocal mix didn’t seem too loud…. But it meant a lot to the band when they got the chance to work with him. Even though Party Dozen worshiped Nick Cave, it is Cave who is a fan of Party Dozen.

In an interview with the NME, Cave told the origin of how he came about on “Macca the Mutt” song, “Party Dozen sent me a song. They wanted me to sing on it. I listened to it. I had an idea. I sang on it. I tried not to f*** it up. Party Dozen are a force of nature.”

Algiers let the restless audience enjoy some introductory music before they came on stage. When they slowly came on stage, starting with drummer Matt Tong, followed by singer Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan, and guitarist Lee Tesche, the energy in the room changed to excitement. The band played in front of a projection, so it was completely dark, forcing us to view the projected images.

Algiers (20 Sep 2021)

We’ve seen the post-punk band before, and this is one of the few bands that is better experience in a live setting. They have a lot of anger and energy in them, and you experience that by seeing them play. We’ve previously noted that they produced some dub-style sound, industrial, and Afrobeat sound with explosive political messages… and it shows how passionate they are about their music. It’s hard to capture that feeling on a studio recording… you just have to see them play to understand why they have such a following.

As you can see from their setlist, most of their set featured songs from their latest, Shook, available now on Matador Records. Speaking of which, one of their new song from Shook, was apply named “Something Wrong”, as something was wrong and due to technical difficulties, the band ended up not playing that song and proceeded to “The Underside of Power”.

We saw Algiers in Sep 2021 and said, “Originally formed in London, with the release of “Blood” in 2012, via Double Phantom Records, Algiers (singer and pianist Franklin James Fisher, bassist Ryan Mahan, guitarist Lee Tesche, and drummer Matt Tong) is based in Atlanta, and produces some interesting dub-style sound, industrial, and Afrobeat sound. Some songs sounds political, but all their songs are explosive, as seen in their live performance. Bassist Ryan Mahan seemed ready to explode. This just shows me that the band is very passionate about their music and their message.”

Kyle Thomas, or known by his stagename, King Tuff, is touring in support of his sixth studio album Smalltown Stardust (Sub Pop).

Thomas described Smalltown Stardust as “an album about love and nature and youth.” But not all the songs were written by him, as with “How I Love”, the song was written by Sasami: “Sasami wrote this song for me way back in 2018, but it didn’t really come together until we started demoing in 2020. This is the type of song I’ve wanted to do for years, but maybe never had the confidence to achieve. I’ve always hid behind loud guitars, but here I’m exposed, and I love how open and empty it is, yet so comfortable too. I wanted to show another side of myself through this record, and I think this song is the perfect example of that.”

Minneapolis’ Products recently announced that they’ve signed to Los Angeles label Solid Brass Records. Perhaps it’s to make their name more Google-friendly, it would seem they’re now listed as Products Band as an official band title… but I’m assuming everyone will likely just call the band ‘Products’.

They’ll be a new album, set for release in 2023 from the new label… stay tuned for more details.

We caught Products in July 2021 and wrote, “Local band Products (Alex on guitar, Jo on vocals, Konner on drums, and Jack on bass) played a quick 30-min set, mostly containing songs from their album Pink Puma. The band recently released a single, “(On Top) A Y'all Tower Of You” yesterday (July 26).”

They promised they’ll be playing new songs off the new record at this upcoming Turf Club show on March 30th. The openers listed for the show is Sass and Killed By Kiwis.

Also, Products are super excited to be playing with their heroes Deerhoof on July 8, 2023. Yes, we like Deerhoof, having seen them a few times … the last time in Georgia in Aug 2016: “Thursday evening’s festivities reached their peak when Deerhoof took the stage at the Georgia Theatre. Singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki didn’t just play music during this performance; she led a musical pep rally. She commanded this crowd to dance, wave their arms and Come See The Duck, and they happily did her bidding.”

Can’t wait to see the Deerhoof/Products team-up in July.

We caught Ber in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Ber aka Berit Dybing then took the stage but with some minor complications. That’s what makes 7th Street Entry such a fun musical venue. It’s an incubation tube for new bands and those bands are their own roadies, and they are only a few feet from the audience as they set up their equipment. For a time the band worked on connecting Mike’s (drummer) ear piece. Then Ber’s main mic wasn’t working, which was an important piece of equipment for a lead singer. No matter. Ber was game and set aside any awkwardness by chatting and taking selfies with the crowd.”

Atlanta’s Algiers is currently on tour for their latest album There is No Year… stopping by 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on September 20th, 2021.

Electronic rock project Zen Mother opened the show. Zen Mother is a duo, featuring Monika (from Nordra) and Adam. For their live shows, they bring along a live drummer (Thomas?).

The band said their music was inspired by French composer Igor Wakhevitch, who was known for exploring psychedelic rock to experimental avant-garde sound.

The band covered OutKast’s “Liberation” in their set. Apparently Algiers are big fan of the hip hop duo (featuring Andre 3000 and Big Boi)… and it would make sense, seeing as both bands are based in Atlanta and probably have played together and expressed mutual adoration.

There is No Year is out now on Matador Records; Algiers continues their 2021 tour.

Derby’s The Struts are quickly adding additional dates for their “Strange Days Are Over Tour”… which includes this upcoming appearance at the Palace Theatre on September 18th.

We last saw the band live in May 2016 and wrote, “When the band had last played the Mainroom in Sept 2015, singer Luke Spiller was under the weather, resulting only in an eight-song/forty-five min. set, with the pledge that they would return and make things right. The resulting 95 min. arena-worthy, hedonistic throwdown was a night-to-day difference, electric in its energy, and put their previous appearance far back in the rearview mirror. Spiller and the rest of the band (guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott and drummer Gethin Davies) echo the heyday of glam and good time rock with their own sound drawn from a mixture of Queen, Rolling Stones, The Sweet, and Slade, and Spiller obviously had picked up a few more Mick Jagger-esque moves, opening for the Stones in front of 80,000 in Paris and elsewhere.”

Atlanta-born-and-raised quartet, and not from Algeria, Algiers, will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on September 20th. Their latest album There is No Year is out now on Matador Records. Although the band is from Georgia, technically they originally formed in London with the release of their first single, “Blood” in 2012, via Double Phantom Records.

The band made a name for themselves opening up for Depeche Mode… so if you like DP, you’ll love Algiers.

Two-piece experimental, electronic rock project Zen Mother will open the show.

The co-headlining Rufus Wainwright and José González is coming to Minneapolis at the Northrop Auditorium on September 23rd.

Rufus Wainwright is currently on tour in support of Unfollow The Rules – The Paramour Sessions, a live recording of his 2020 album Unfollow the Rules (plus other classic songs from his discography).

We last saw Sweden’s José González (formerly of Junip) in April 2015 and noted, “For the encore, they invited Ólöf Arnalds on stage with the full band and they played "I'll Be Your Mirror", the Velvet Underground (with Nico) cover song. It is a very faithful cover, you can tell right away that they got the notes just right. The rest of the encore were two songs from the new album…”
