On the autumn days in the middle of October (thank god because we would all melt in the otherwise typical days of such shenanigans) will bestow the 6th installation of the transcendent music festival Desert Daze in Joshua Tree, California. It is known that J Tree (as us locals call it) has a somewhat spiritual energy about it, and musicians have been flocking there for years to get juiced on the wondrous inspiration that the desert embodies. So it’s fitting that some of the most eclectic artists in the game right now would be part of this special lineup. Music lovers camp onsite under the stars for this 4 day event.

While last year’s lineup was oodles of impressive (Washed Out, Deerhunter and The Black Angels, to name a few) this year will be equally scintillating. Thursday night John Dayer of On Sees and Troy Bootow of Death Hymn Number 9 will DJ, amongst other special guests. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile and the Sea Lice will be kicking off Friday, playing tunes from their collaborative album that is expected to be released later this year.  Adult Swim will present Things You’ve Never Seen in a Desert!, and Prettiest Eyes (a local LA band), Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Liars, Boris, La Femme, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions will follow, amongst others.

Saturday and Sunday will be filled with Iggy Pop, John Cale, Tortoise, The Gories, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton, Twin Peaks, Avey Tare, Mr. Elevator, JJUUJJUU, Mint Field, Spiritualized, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, Eagles of Death Metal, Allah-Las, Atlas Sound, John Dwyer DJ set, Khruangbin, Cigarettes After Sex, Weyes Blood, L.A. Witch, Jerry Paper, Death Valley Girls, and Fever the Ghost. Weyes Blood will by far be the of the upmost importance for moi, as her latest album Front Row Seat To The Earth has been in heavy rotation for the past year.

Danny Perez, Mad Alchemy Liquid Light Show, Billgazer, The Blindspot Project, and Cloaking will provide all three outdoor stages with projections all weekend long.

Sonic performances will run alongside panel speakers, curated daily film screenings, and the Mystic Bazaar’s daily schedule of metaphysical workshops.

The Institute of Mentalphysics, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Son, founded by Ding Le Mei, a westerner turned Tibetan Monk, is the oldest and largest spiritual retreat center in the western United States. The beautifully maintained grounds of garden paths, fountains, labyrinths and captivating architecture rest atop a rare confluence of three underground aquifers and a measurable magnetic field which causes a palpable energetic effect on those who visit. Audience members have the chance of staying in one of Wright’s on site cottages, or camping under the vast, twinkling desert sky. One of the most successful, influential progressive rock band in the world is Yes. In 1983, the band changed lineup (with Trevor Rabin) and concentrated mostly on more commercial and pop-oriented music. A second Yes band called Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman (with original singer Jon Anderson) was formed this year.

Expect Yes feat ARW to play pre-90125 album, meaning Yes’ biggest hit song ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ and other classic songs.

We previously caught Jon Anderson’s project Anderson Ponty Band in May 2016 and noted that the vocalist was still singing Yes songs.

We caught the Canadian band Royal Canoe in 2014 and wrote, “Opening the show to a strong crowd reception was Manitoba-based six-piece, Royal Canoe, in support of their debut U.S. release, Today We’re Believers (Roll Call Records). The Canadian ensemble can truly be described as unique and eclectic, with its hybrid of sounds, musical time changes, dual drummers, and singer Matt Peters, who often uses two microphones and manipulates his voice, electronically and otherwise.”

The last time we saw co-headliner Little Scream, she surprised us with two dancers on stage for the song ‘Dark Dance’. We also noted, “According to singer Laurel Sprengelmeyer, she said she was born in Iowa and went to shows like this one and actually dreamed of one day playing shows. The Montreal-based band was actually supposed to headlined the Turf Club in St Paul, as you can see from the original poster listing, but smartly the organizers decided to consolidate the two shows.”

Although the Allah-Las was previously in the area on September 24th, 2016, at the Turf Club to promote Calico Review (Mexican Summer), they’ve decided to do a round two by stopping by the Triple Rock Social Club last Tuesday, March 14th.

The Babe Rainbow

Australia’s The Babe Rainbow opened up the show with a generous 45-min set. The self-described “monkey disco” band is a bit more laid-back 60’s psychedelic, a little bit beatnik-esque, band. Whatever they’re into, these guys seemed like really cool dudes to hang out with.

Normally the band is a trio with Angus Dowling as both drummer and vocalist, but for the live shows, they’ve added a dedicated drummer, in addition to Kool Breeze and Dr Elliot Love-Wisdom.

They tried a couple of different fun things on their set, which they gave this impression that the Triple Rock show was the first time they’ve tried it. For example, they tried to make a “special announcement” (but no dedications were made) and a special vocal delay affect (echo effect) on one of their song.

They ended their set with a Portuguese song, which required Angus to bring out his iPhone to read lyrics off of it. To be honest, I didn’t think he needed the lyrics, as the audience wouldn’t have known if he was singing it correctly or not.

Setlist

It didn’t take very long for psych band Allah-Las (Matthew Correia, Spencer Dunham, Miles Michaud, and Pedrum Siadatian) to setup and go on stage (earlier than scheduled!) The California band has often been compared to The Zombies, and The Kinks, but with the release Calico Review, they seemed more like Velvet Underground (minus their Nico involvement). Still, they’re in great company, and fans agreed that they’re just as good, as evident by the terrific turnout to their show.

We first caught the band in 2013, when they were still promoting their debut self-titled record, and noted, “a jangly garage rock set capturing a peaceful, easy California-like feeling while sounding heavily like Abkco-era Rolling Stones, Zombies and Animals on tracks like ‘Catamaran’ and ‘Don’t You Forget It’ from last year’s self-titled debut album. Singer Miles Michaud looks somewhat like a 70’s Dylan, but their sound is from the decade before, and Amos Lee-lookalike drummer Matt Correia even stepped out for lead on the last song, maracas in hand.”

At that time, the band only had an album’s worth of material to play from, but now back with over 30+ songs, the band sounded more diverse, often medleying and mixing songs to create a seamless soundtrack.

Many fans still consider their sophomore album Worship the Sun was the band at their finest, and they were treated with a double-set of intro songs, ‘Follow You Down’ and ‘Buffalo Nickel’. Images of light shapes were projected on the background as the band continues throughout their hour-long set.

Allah-Las’ Calico Review is out now. Their tour continues and will end at Coachella 2017.

The first non-Minnesota band the play the newly opened Palace Theatre in St Paul will be Phantogram. We got a sneak peek at the venue in Dec 2016 and wrote, “Booked and operated by a collaboration of First Avenue and Jam Productions, the venue expects to host around fifty events annually, and will be used during the day by nearby McNally Smith College of Music as a learning tool for students to know box office, staging, and venue operations.”

Given that the Palace is nearly double the size of First Avenue, it would make sense that bands that consistently selling out First Avenue would turn to the Palace. With all the hype of the new venue, Phantogram also sold out the Sunday show.

Phantogram will also be bringing shoegaze alternative The Veldt on tour with them for a brief six-exclusive U.S. Mid West cities before the duo departs for their European tour. Expect Phantogram to return their appearances at Coachella.

The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Polydor/UMe

More details about Polydor/Universal Music Enterprise (UMe)'s release of The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition below. I have a digital copy for review, so hopefully, it will be done soon-ish. Just quickly looking over the tracks, many of these tracks already exists in one form or another on their previously two albums, so a lot of familiar songs.

The 65-track, 6-CD package is housed in a case-bound book and features several different mixes including the remastered stereo mix by MGM house engineer Luis Pastor “Val” Valentin, a set of 1969 recordings, many of which were previously unreleased, from the Record Plant in New York City that were supposed to be the band’s fourth album, several of which ended up on Loaded and Reed’s first two solo releases, and unreleased live recordings from The Matrix in 1969.

The remastered Valentin stereo mix of The Velvet Underground will also be made available as both a single-disc CD, and as part of the two-CD Deluxe Edition version with a 12-track audio bonus disc featuring the best of Live At The Matrix, taped on November 26 & 27, 1969. Digital versions of both the single disc “Valentin mix” and the six-CD, Super Deluxe Edition will also be available through other digital partners including MFiT and HD Audio formats.

Los Angeles garage-rock quartet Allah-Las will be bringing the California sunshine to the miserable ice-covered streets of St. Paul December 1st when they make a stop at the Turf Club. Taking a cue from great psych-rock acts like Love and the Byrds, Allah-Las have crafted a sound generous with driving, trippy rhythms and enough distorted guitar licks to make Link Wray smile. The band, together since 2008 and consisting of Matthew Correia on drums, Spencer Dunham on bass, vocalist and guitarist Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian on lead guitar, put out their self-titled record on Innovative Leisure in 2012. In September, they released Worship the Sun, a 14-track electric-folk homage to that mystical land known as LA and all of its wonderful weirdos. Or, in the band’s words, “a teenage symphony to the sun, for all those who know its grace.” Check out their recent singles “501-415,” “Buffalo Nickel” and their freaked-out take on the Frantics’ “No Werewolf.”

Tagging along for the fun are LA peers, Tashaki Miyaki, a dream-pop duo whose shoegaze-y treatment of some notable songs have garnered them lots of buzz. So far the band has only released a handful of original EPs and singles as well as a record of covers that feature gorgeous takes on the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” Father John Misty’s “Hollywood Forever Cemetary” and Chris Bell’s “There Was A Light”. Most recently, the band released an incredible version of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones” from his iconic Purple Rain record, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary.

St Nick, the other Nick, Nick Lowe is bringing his "Nick Lowe's Quality Holiday Revue" to Minneapolis this December 3rd.

When Lowe's record label approaching him to produce a holiday album, Lowe reacted, "It was more disquiet and alarm, accompanied by feelings of ‘Do they really think I would wish to sully my good name on this tawdry and vulgar commercialism?’ But that feeling lasted about thirty-six and a half seconds, before I came to and thought, ‘Vulgar, tawdry commercialism? Yes, please, when do we start?’ Seriously, I thought, ‘Wait a minute, this could be really good fun.’”

The Allah-Las are music fans, having met each other working at Amoeba Music in Los Angeles. We caught the band last year and described them as "sounding heavily like Abkco-era Rolling Stones, Zombies and Animals."

Speaking of Animals, their latest single has a b-side called "No Werewolves", and you can recently hear "Buffalo Nickel" on Soundcloud.

This year, 4/20 happened to fall on Record Store Day as well as annually commemorate a certain herb, so it all somehow came together at the Fine Line as Elephant Stone, The Allah-Las, and Black Angels brought a celebratory and psychedelic evening of retro/modern revival rock.

ELEPHANT STONE

Montreal’s Elephant Stone opened the show, armed with swirling projected images and frontman Rishi Dhir’s sitar to get the evening started on a tranced Indian-tinged beginning. Dhir would later return to join the Black Angels toward the end of their set, but won over several in the crowd with his spirited solos and weaving late 60’s era Beatles/Kinks sounds with a modern edge. Playing cuts from their two full-lengths, The Seven Seas (2009) and Elephant Stone (2013), the self-described ‘Hindie Rock’ band from Canada dazzled through 'Looking Through Baby Blue'; 'Setting Sun'; 'Don't You Know'; 'Heavy Moon' and 'Masters of War', ending with the sitar-driven 'A Silent Moment'.

THE ALLAH-LAS

Los Angeles-based The Allah-Las followed (maybe not the best name choice given current global tensions) with a jangly garage rock set capturing a peaceful, easy California-like feeling while sounding heavily like Abkco-era Rolling Stones, Zombies and Animals on tracks like ‘Catamaran’ and ‘Don’t You Forget It’ from last year’s self-titled debut album. Singer Miles Michaud looks somewhat like a 70’s Dylan, but their sound is from the decade before, and Amos Lee-lookalike drummer Matt Correia even stepped out for lead on the last song, maracas in hand.

BLACK ANGELS Record Store Day at Electric Fetus

Despite their busy day, the Black Angels kept things on-time and entered as a hypnotic, kaleidoscopic mélange of pixels and patterns projected on their large backdrop and four on-stage panels. Earlier, they had started their morning on-air session on local public radio almost a half hour early and also played an (on-time) 35 min. Record Store Day set at the Electric Fetus, with people jammed down every aisle to catch a glimpse.

Beginning their 90 min set with 'Vikings/I Hear Colors (Chromaesthesia)'; somewhat inexplicably their third song was 'Don’t Play with Guns', which is currently receiving heavy local radio rotation. Shortly after which, a handful of people were out the doors-their mistake, as it had just started to get good.

Heavy-bodied, layered, thick, and yes, a little hazy

Reverb, drone, and singer Alex Maas sounding like he was singing down an endless hallway were all present in a neo-psychedelic sound that obviously draws from the past, but is updated into something after five albums, that The Black Angels can truly call their own. Their music resembles a good stout on tap - heavy-bodied, layered, thick, and yes, a little hazy, and the crowd was loving it, some aided by their own 4/20 stimulants.

'Indigo Meadow', the title track that intros the new album was under layered with a floating keyboard riff, then the intensity and volume turned back up for newer songs like 'Twisted Light' and 'The Day'. Elephant Stone’s Rishi Dhir joined the band at encore for a rousing finish- distortion, fuzz, guitars, and sitar blazing in a wall of sound on the last song of the evening, 'True Believers' that begged the question to perhaps add sitars permanently to the Black Angels sound.

This was an Austin, TX band of few words, as they didn't say much between songs, but instead chose to turn up to eleven, add vertigo-inducing graphics, and let the experience of the performance do the talking…and not just because it was 4/20.
