2025 enters...with a near-record dumping of snow…!
Most of the metro got hit with a glazing of ice, followed by a foot or more of the white stuff, causing delays and closures for several days. Much more common in our home base of MN, it's fewer and far between to see on the Plains, resulting in the fourth-biggest snowfall in history.
We’ve bundled up, layered our clothing, and braved the elements before, as a little cold shouldn’t stop one from checking out some great live events- a few for the week are listed below.
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from January 14th to 21st:

TUESDAY JANUARY 14
Tank and the Bangas, Austin Brown, Jan 14, recordBar, $31.16
Now this is an excuse to get out of the cold and start the new year right!
New Orleans-based Tank and the Bangas rose to prominence in 2017 after their unanimous NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest victory. Bringing their blend of poetry, R&B, gospel, and pop to a worldwide stage, they’ve been praised as one of the “best live bands in America” by NPR Music. We caught them live in 2018 in Minneapolis, along with Big Freeda.
In 2019, the band released their major label debut, Green Balloon, on Verve Forecast to widespread critical acclaim, earning the band a Best New Artist nomination at that year's Grammy Awards. Their third studio album, Red Balloon, received a nomination for “Best Progressive R&B Album” at the 2023 Grammy Awards and their recent three part spoken word collection 'The Heart, The Mind, The Soul' is out now.
Each chapter of this spoken word collection features Tank collaborating with a different producer. The Soul pairs her with acclaimed producer and jazz musician Robert Glasper, as well as Austin Brown and Brian London. This follows The Heart with James Poyser and The Mind with Iman Omari
Speaking of Austin Brown, arrive early as he’s on the bill as well- recent single, 'California' pays homage to his Golden State roots and community spirit, and recalls how his father's hard work and summers at the beach with Aunt Janet Jackson helped shape him (yes, that Janet!).
He plays with his band BLVK CVSTLE and alongside his musical endeavors, Brown's commitment to community-building shines through his innovative initiatives, such as the BLVK Ocean Beach parties.
Follow-up single, "Knock Me Down," featured a video shot in London and both are included on his new album, The Festival.
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15
THURSDAY JANUARY 16
FRIDAY JANUARY 17
SATURDAY JANUARY 18
Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Jan. 18, T-Mobile Center, $35-$499
Veteran comedians and masters of making the ordinary seem hilarious, Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan will be working together once again on a 10-arena tour in 2025 following the success of their first tour in 2023 and some touring together last year, and KC is a stop at the halfway point.
Seinfeld’s comedy career took off after his first appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1981. Eight years later, he teamed up with fellow comedian Larry David to create what was to become the most successful comedy series in the history of television: Seinfeld. The show ran on NBC for nine seasons, winning numerous Emmy, Golden Globe and People’s Choice awards
His latest Emmy nominated Netflix projects include Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours to Kill along with the highly acclaimed web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. He recently starred in the Emmy-nominated comedy film, Unfrosted, which he directed, co-wrote, and produced.
Gaffigan is a seven-time Grammy nominated comedian, actor, writer, producer, two-time New York Times best-selling author, three-time Emmy winning top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling recording artist. His 11th special, The Skinny, just premiered on Hulu as their first ever original stand-up special.
He was also recently awarded for being the first comedian to reach one billion streams on Pandora.
Princess Bride w Cary Elwes, Jan 18 at Kauffman Center, is POSTPONED to APRIL 12
SUNDAY JANUARY 19
MONDAY JANUARY 20
TUESDAY JANUARY 21
This is a part of a series of Trailblazing Talks from their Changemaker Speaker Series that blends science, art, culture, travel, and more into a varied and interesting roster of innovators. We attended a couple seasons of a similar National Geographic series in Minneapolis and found all the guests very interesting with compelling stories.
National Geographic photographer and Sony Ambassador, Michael Yamashita as he follows in the footsteps of Marco Polo, the greatest Western explorer of all time. Relive his 13th Century odyssey along the Silk Road, from Italy through Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, all the way to China, and his voyage back across the South China Sea with stops in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.
Marco Polo gave the west a vibrant window into Asian culture, art, religion and landscapes, accurately describing the people and places he encountered. 700 years later, the explorer who inspired a bold new age of exploration and discovery is celebrated here.
(we’re also thrilled that Yamashita, like the WHM staff, is an exclusive user of Sony cameras, which is our choice of equipment as well...if we could only get that endorsement deal as well…!)
