The Fall has it all--
Here we go, September into October are usually the busy days for live music, as acts hit the road to play everywhere before the holiday season hits. Weather turns great in the heartland as well, as we’re typically done with high-humidity and triple-digit temps for the season, and the nights are cool and pleasant.
The start of football season takes up Sunday afternoons (doesn’t mean you can’t see a show that night) and starts the three-peat chances of Chiefs Kingdom to rule the league once again (oh, and some inevitable Tay-Tay KC appearances!)
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from September 3rd to 9th.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 3
Once (musical) KC Rep, Sept 3-22, $39-$79
Based on the moving musical film of boy-meets-girl (written/directed by John Carney), the eight-time Tony Award-winner (including Best Musical) “Once” tells the story of two souls brought together by the magic of music in the heart of Dublin. A tale of chance encounters unfolds, with unspoken emotions and the transformative power of dreams driving the narrative. As the characters navigate the delicate balance between love and the pursuit of artistic aspirations, the audience is swept away on a poignant musical voyage.
With music and lyrics by The Swell Season (aka Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová), a Book by Enda Walsh, and directed by Artistic Director Stuart Carden and featuring gorgeous songs like the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly,” the transformative power of love and music will uplift you to a world where every note tells a story, and every song becomes a journey of the heart.
We’re anxious to see KC Rep’s production of this modern classic, which has its official opening night on Friday, Sept 6 and also on Fridays, area Irish musician Eddie Delahunt will be playing in the lobby pre-show, so come early.
Dancestopia, continues thru Sept 8, Lacygne, KS, $239+
Escape to the magical Emerald City and find yourself in a world of enchantment, wonder, and bass at the 10th annual EDM music, arts & camping festival featuring 200+ artists, world-class production, five stages, art installations and more. Nestled in the rolling hills surrounded by forest and pristine lake water, an hour south of KC the lineup runs almost a week now, with the final three being the biggest nights- featuring sets from Rezz; The Lox; Sullivan King; Black Tiger Sex Machine; Ganja White Night; Ray Volpe; Flux Pavilion; Ramz; Infected Mushroom and many more.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 4
Here Come the Mummies, Sept 4, Uptown, POSTPONED to November 22
The bizarre and bandaged eight-piece funk-rock band whose anonymous members dress in mummy bandages and sing often humorous songs are always fun live. Beyond that, not much is known about the members of the band, which was formed in 2000 in Nashville (or maybe 5000 years ago in ancient lands). The band members go by such monikers as Mummy Cass, Eddie Mummy, Spaz, and K.W. Tut.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 5
O.A.R., Sept 5, Starlight Theatre,$29.50-$125
Alternative rock band Of A Revolution (O.A.R.) has hit the road again this summer with 38 performance dates across the US that run into November, with dance-funk outfit Ripe supporting in KC along with DJ Logic.
“It’s time for us to get out there and play a full set, jam out, and have another best summer of our lives,” said Marc Roberge in a press release for the upcoming tour, “We can’t wait to hang this summer with our friends Ripe and DJ Logic!”
We caught them live at this very venue just last summer, co-headlining with the Goo Goo Dolls for a fun-filled night, complete with audience-supplied props.
The band’s longstanding charity, Heard The World Fund, will receive a portion of the tour’s proceeds. Heard the World Fund has generated over $1.2 million to date to aid children and education initiatives in impoverished regions across the United States.
High on Fire, Sept 5, recordBar,$30
The band is out headlining tour dates in support of their new ninth album, "Cometh The Storm" and lead single, “Burning Down”. The trek started in May and features support from Venezuelan post-rock outfit Zeta and Massachusetts crossover crew High Command.
The Grammy Award-winning group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recorded the LP in Salem, MA with producer Kurt Ballou. The 11-song effort is the first to feature drummer Coady Willis, alongside bassist Jeff Matz and guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike.
The band comments: "HIGH ON FIRE legion! We are stoked to take the stage in a city near you as we bring 'Cometh The Storm' to life. Looking forward to a triumphant run of shows and reuniting with friends. See you soon!"
The Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter, Sept 5, Liberty Hall, CANCELED
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6
Paralandra, Sept 6, Kansas Crossing Casino, Pittsburg KS; Free!
Since their 2013 inception, the Springfield MO band has hit the ground running and is led by father and daughter, Paul and Casandra Carson, later joined by local friends, bassist, Sawyer Rikard, and drummer, Dakota Watson, to form their lineup. 2014’s self-made album “Rise Up” launched the band into the forefront, attracting the attention of Legend Recordings.
Their standalone single “Love Will Win” (2019) actually topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart, and has become an anthem. In 2021, they cut a full length album “Street Magic” then re-entered the studio with producer Elvis Baskette in Spring 2023 for their follow up and current album.
A two-hour-ish drive, but a free show and chance to see a band close to their home turf.
Sexyy Red, Sept 6, Azura Amph,$69-$134
The "Pound Town" rapper was originally slated to kick-off the U.S. outing in Seattle but it was bumped to the days later in Atlanta.
The rapper had acknowledged the tour kick-off switch-up on her socials, but she threw shade on reports that her first arena tour was canceling. “My fans are buying tickets we’re doin just fine. We not cancelling no tour,” she wrote in response to a post suggesting her tour was in jeopardy. “Dis how Dey try to do u wen u go wit an independent promoter n the bigger companies try to sabotage u,” she added in another post.
After breaking through last summer with the “Pound Town 2” remix with Tay Keith and Nicki Minaj — which hit No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, Sexyy continued her chart run this year, with “Get It Sexyy” peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Featuring Special Guest Kodak Black, plus Hunxho, Loe Shimmy and BlakeIANA
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7
Mac Maron (comedy) , Sept 7, The Midland,$39.50-$69.50
In between episodes of his long-running podcast “WTF,” the 60-year-old comic will return to the
road. On his ‘All In Tour’. This run of gigs comes on the heels of Maron’s highly regarded 2023 HBO special “From Bleak To Dark” where he found a way to make light of and reckon with his tragic experience losing his partner, director Lynn Shelton in the early pandemic days to acute myeloid leukemia.
Boxmasters (w/Billy Bob Thornton), Sept 7, Knuckleheads, $38.50-$58.50
The Boxmasters make their usual KC stop at one of their favorite venues, bringing their latest album, “Love & Hate In Desperate Places.” With J.D. Andrew and Bud Thornton leading the charge, the album introduces Kirk McKim and Raymond Hardy to the lineup, adding new dimensions to their sound on guitar and bass respectively. The tour, titled the “2024 Love & Hate Tour,” launched in Texas and plays all corners of the country.
We talked to the lead pair and caught the band live, in summer 2021 in Topeka as the first national act book at a local refurbished theater. The Boxmasters, formed in 2007, draw inspiration from the rock and roll of the 1960s, with nods to bands like the Beatles, Byrds, and Beach Boys. Additional influences range from The Mothers of Invention to Kris Kristofferson.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9
Epik High, Sept 9, Uptown, $50-$89
The renowned K-hip-hop trio is out on their ‘The Pump’ comeback tour, a 23-date jaunt across North America in August and September, starting in Vancouver. They released their first-ever mixtape, and plan to deliver more projects after celebrating their 20th anniversary last year.
Viewing the group’s 21st year since releasing their debut album “Map of the Human Soul” as a fresh start, member Tablo tells Billboard how “our fans call this Epik High’s ‘+1st Year,'” pointing to a revitalized spirit driving their latest efforts. “It really does feel like a fresh start after the milestone year we had last year.”
