Gah, mid-September already, time is flying!
Some great recent announcements from the likes of Nick Cave, Zakk Sabbath (in LFK), Awolnation, and more.
What you won’t see is Jane’s Addiction whose recent Boston show ended in fisticuffs, but we hope tour mates Love and Rockets carry on and make room for a KC stop. Local faves REO Speedwagon are seemingly hanging it up after their current run as well, but we can see Kevin Cronin continuing solo.
The Royals seem to be making a post-season run, and our Chiefs remain undefeated, so good times in KC currently.
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from September 17th to 24th.

Once (musical) KC Rep, through Sept 22, $39-$79
Final Shows of the run! Read our Review here
Based on the moving musical film of boy-meets-girl (written/directed by John Carney), the eight-time Tony Award-winner (including Best Musical) “Once” tells the story of two souls brought together by the magic of music in the heart of Dublin. A tale of chance encounters unfolds, with unspoken emotions and the transformative power of dreams driving the narrative. As the characters navigate the delicate balance between love and the pursuit of artistic aspirations, the audience is swept away on a poignant musical voyage.
With music and lyrics by The Swell Season (aka Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová), a Book by Enda Walsh, and directed by Artistic Director Stuart Carden and featuring gorgeous songs like the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly,” the transformative power of love and music will uplift you to a world where every note tells a story, and every song becomes a journey of the heart.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18
Burton Cummings, Sept 18, Knuckleheads (outdoors),$58.50-$79.50
In the wake of settling that trademark dispute with his former Guess Who band mates, Cummings will release a new album and is on a North American headline tour. “A Few Good Moments” arrives September 27 through Jojo Productions as Cummings's first new solo album in over a decade, featuring a co-write with Bryan Adams' right-hand man Jim Vallance ("Up to the Minute") and a cover of Arc Angels' "Shape I'm In."
"The songs on this album took a while to become the proper collection," the singer-songwriter explained in a statement. "I believe in these songs because they are the result of having lived more years. At this point I have no interest in writing teenage love songs. Aging has changed the writing and that's natural. I believe in these songs and I hope that the people who have followed my material enjoy them. I want this album to stand up when it's listened to years from now."
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 19
The String Cheese Incident, Sept 19, The Midland,$49.50-$85
The famed jam band is back on the road for their fall 2024 tour and ready to show KC how to groove. Following that, the second half of their fall run will be Halloween-focused, beginning on Oct 24-27, when String Cheese Incident will participate in Suwannee Hulaween in Live Oak, Fla. For their follow-up, the band will keep the spooky vibes going at Brooklyn’s Paramount Theater in NYC (Oct. 30), which doubles as the group’s first date with special guests Stolen Gin, who will stick around for the remaining dates, including a one-night stand in Philadelphia for Halloween.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 20
The Front Bottoms, Sept 20, Uptown, $37-$75
The alt/indie duo have announced the “Finding Your Way Home Tour,” whick kicked in Boston on September 12th, and extends through the middle of December. The Front Bottoms’ most recent album is 2023’s “You Are Who You Hang Out With”.
Allen Stone, Sept 20, Liberty Hall-Lawrence,$30-$69
Right after his supporting performances with Chris Stapleton’s All American Road Show, Stone and his band is back with A Bit Of Everywhere Tour, going virtually ‘everywhere’ in the US, starting tour in Rocklin, CA and hitting cities such as Atlanta, Nashville, Austin, Minneapolis and more before ending off in San Diego. He’s energetic and fun every time we’ve seen him live, most recently in 2018.
Allen Stone has released the new single “A Fathers Song” via ATO Records. “A Fathers Song” has become a fan favorite during Allen’s concerts and live clips have gone viral on TIktok. “I poured my heart into trying to capture the whole fatherhood experience,” Allen shares. “Even today, it still gets me teary-eyed – it’s like every emotion I felt becoming a dad is wrapped in those lyrics and melodies.”
Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore w Lisa Morales, Sept 20, Knuckleheads,$22.50
Americana legends are on the road touring their new album, Texicali. The pair are great collaborators and friends, writing and playing together on the new record, defying genre expectations and having a good time, because they’ve earned it. Price for both is easily worth seeing them separately, so go!
Arrive early for another Southwest musician, Lisa Morales supporting her fourth solo album, “Sonora” (just out on Luna Records) and first single/video “Hermanitas in the Rain”, a tribute to her longtime musical partner, Roberta. Morales recalls, “I started writing this song three days before my sister, Roberta, passed. I went into her room to have her help me with it but it was hard. I had all these beautiful memories flooding back to me in that moment. I wrote it all in a matter of minutes but didn’t realize it was done, music and all, until I brought it back out a year and a half later.”
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21
Styx, Sept 21, Cable Dahmer Arena- Independence, $39-$165
Come sail away with rock royalty! Legendary rock group Styx is bringing their 2024 tour with a night of chart-topping hits and singalongs on timeless hits like “The Grand Illusion,” “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” and “Renegade”. This concert promises to take you on a musical journey spanning over four decades.
Styx is known for always delivering a powerful and electrifying live performance- their latest studio album, “Crash of the Crown,” released in 2021, showcases the band’s enduring creative spirit.
From the guitar riffs of Tommy Shaw to the soaring vocals of James “JY” Young and Lawrence Gowan, Styx’s live shows are the grand illusion of classic rock!
Quiet Riot, Sept 21, Grinders KC,$17-$52
Ok, they’re almost a “ghost band” at this point, anchored by one original member, the great bassist Rudy Sarzo. He’s played bass for Whitesnake, Blue Oyster Cult, and the Guess Who and performed with Dio, Ozzy, and Randy Rhodes. And get this- the current lineup is actually good! - Alex Grossi on guitar, Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate on vocals, and Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative on drums, so is worth celebrating two decades of Grinders in KC with this special show and many local openers.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 23
The Used, Plain White T's, and Raue, Sept 23, The Midland,$39.50-$65
Emo/screamo kids: this one’s for you- kicking off back in June, the tour wraps with a final performance on October 7 at New Orleans’ House of Blues. The Used’s recent release, “MEDZ”, dropped in June, a mix of previously released material alongside eight new tracks from the Toxic Positivity writing session.
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 24
Gracie Abrams, Sept 24, Uptown, SOLD-OUT AF
Dare we say director dad J.J. may not be the most talented in the Abrams family?!
Daughter Gracie is on an 18-date in support of her second album, “The Secret of Us”, with shows sold out long, long ago. Abrams brings along support from singer-songwriter Role Model throughout the tour (except on the final show of the tour).
Abrams describes the LP as “the album that I made with some of my favorite people.” She added: “We had real, true fun writing this album. There were also the occasional tears.”
Live, she’s been playing a confident set of almost two dozen originals, sometimes bringing the opener up for a song, and with a surprise acoustic number that differs from show to show. A star in the making!
Descendants w/ Buzzcocks, Sept 24, Liberty Hall-Lawrence, $40-$75
Punk legends Descendents wrapped up the spring co-headlining tour with Circle Jerks and returned to the road together in the fall for another run of dates. Depends on your preference, but I say call it fortunate that it’s Buzzcocks on the bill for the Lawrence show, although all three have played the town regularly since their glory days.
Road to Joni w Carmel Holt, Sheroes live podcast, Sept 24
“The Road To Joni” is a podcast that honors the legendary Joni Mitchell and is also a 10-week takeover of the SHEROES Radio Hour (as heard in KC on The Bridge 90.9FM) releasing new episodes weekly as host Carmel Holt has embarked on a cross-country road trip from New York to California and back again; and will run through November 7, Joni’s 81st birthday. Holt will of course, stop in LA where Mitchell herself will be performing two “Joni Jam” concerts, on October 19 and 20, at the Hollywood Bowl.
Holt plans to stop in select markets for tapings, and on-air visits in cities where her show is broadcast, creating a communal experience among public radio partners, listeners, and fans. We believe it’s just an on-air stop at The Bridge in Kansas City, but our Minneapolis/St. Paul friends should tune into The Current, as a multi-day event is planned Sept 19-21, with a St. Vincent appearance (who’s also in town to play at The Palace).
About the regular weekly show/production company: “As an independent feminist and queer-powered production team, SHEROES has historically been a femme and non-binary focused series, and for the first time is opening its doors wide for guests of all genders for its most inclusive production thus far to celebrate one central SHERO.”
M Ward, Sept 24, Madrid, $30-$45
The new album is “For Beginners: The Best of M. Ward”, a collection for fans of any era, bringing together 14 tracks from across his Merge Records discography, including the newly recorded song “Cry” (a stripped cover of Godley & Creme featuring Melbourne, Australia’s Folk Bitch Trio).
Beginning with “Chinese Translation” and “Poison Cup” from 2006’s Post-War, the compilation also features his singular cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” from 2003’s Transfiguration of Vincent, and breaks out into “Never Had Nobody Like You” from 2009’s Hold Time. With this career-spanning collection, it’s probably a good tour to see him live.
