Pools have closed, light jackets are out, leaves are falling and school’s in session, meaning Fall is fully here- live shows in the area are ramping up with a couple of cancellations too (see below), so stay abreast on artist and venue websites, as well as some social channels, especially on day-of.
Shows keep announcing, including Nick Cave playing downtown next May, but mid-September to mid-November remain the busiest of the season. We’ll even be heading out of town next month, to bring a coverage of a few special shows as well.
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from September 10th to 16th.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 10
Once (musical) KC Rep, through Sept 22, $39-$79
Based on the moving musical film of boy-meets-girl (written/directed by John Carney), the eight-time Tony Award-winner (including Best Musical) “Once” tells the story of two souls brought together by the magic of music in the heart of Dublin. A tale of chance encounters unfolds, with unspoken emotions and the transformative power of dreams driving the narrative. As the characters navigate the delicate balance between love and the pursuit of artistic aspirations, the audience is swept away on a poignant musical voyage.
With music and lyrics by The Swell Season (aka Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová), a Book by Enda Walsh, and directed by Artistic Director Stuart Carden and featuring gorgeous songs like the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly,” the transformative power of love and music will uplift you to a world where every note tells a story, and every song becomes a journey of the heart.
We’re anxious to see KC Rep’s production of this modern classic, which has its official opening night on Friday, Sept 6 and also on Fridays, area Irish musician Eddie Delahunt will be playing in the lobby pre-show, so come early.
Logan Ledger, Sept 10, Knuckleheads, $35
The Bay Area-bred singer/songwriter sets most of his songs in shadowy spaces like streets in the dead of night. Produced by 13-time Grammy Award-winner T Bone Burnett, the Nashville-based artist’s self-titled debut featured his unique dark take on country music, yet still grounding in classic song structure.
Burnett plays guitar onmost tracks and stacks the record with a-list players including guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch- the same band that played on the Burnett-produced Raising Sand album by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss that swept the 2009 Grammys.
I think we’re each attracted to the more sinister aspects of folk and roots music, and we each have a desire to keep that music alive while finding a way to make something new out of it,” Ledger says.
He’ll be playing acoustic with Jeremy Pinnell on this special tour.
Snow Tha Product, Sept 10, The Midland,$34.50-$38
The Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum singer, rapper, and actress (aka Claudia Feliciano) is out on a U.S. and Mexico festival tour that will hit over 30 cities.
She first broke through in 2013 with the release of hits like “Play,” “Hello,” and “Doing Fine.” She hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Heartseekers Albums chart with her first EP in 2016.Her 2021 collaboration with music producer Bizarrap on “BZRP Music Sessions #39” debuted in the top 20 of Billboard's Latin Digital Song Sales chart and the single has over 230 million views to date. It was also nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Rap/Hip Hop Song. In 2024, she was also recognized with a Premio Lo Nuestro nomination for Best New Female Artist.
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 11
Grupo Frontera, Sept 11, T-Mobile Center CANCELED
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12
Koe Wetzel, Sept 12, Azura Amph. $39.50-$79
The popular part country part post-grunge part hillbilly punk-rock 31-year-old singer known for his hit, “Something To Talk About” is out on his ‘Damn Near Normal Tour’ with special guests Treaty Oak Revival and Kat Hasty.
“It’s been a fun winter in the studio working on new music, but we can’t wait to be back on the road getting rowdy with the fans,” Wetzel shared earlier this year, “And who knows, we might even have some more new music to sing for y’all at these shows soon…”
STRFKR, Sept 12, Granada- Lawrence, $35-$85
The Portland indie rock band is out playing live, in support of ”Parallel Realms”, their newest album, released March 1st via Polyvinyl Record Co. with its lead single, “Together Forever,”
The band’s Josh Hodges comments on the new single, “‘Together Forever’ is an old song that we’ve tried to do for several albums but it just didn’t feel right until now. Things fell together in the right way with the arrangement and lyrics and it finally made sense. And Chris Coady’s mixing pushed it over the edge for us, so we’re ready to release it to the world. This one’s for the shorties.”
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13
Ivan Cornejo, Sept 13, The Midland, $49.50-$249.50
The rising Mexican singer-songwriter is on the biggest tour of his career, a 26-city trek in support of his new album, “Mirada,” which was released in July, with lead single, “Baby Please.”
Cornejo told Variety, “It’s been a while since I’ve released new music, and I can’t wait to share these fresh sounds and heartfelt performances with everyone. This tour feels like a celebration of all the creativity and passion that’s been brewing over the past years.”
Soft Kill, Sept 13, Granada- Lawrence, $25
The Chicago alt rock duo was conceived by Tobias Grave and is completed by his partner Nicole Colbath, coming out the other side of Grave’s struggle with addiction and stints in prison, which he discusses openly and reflects on in the songs.
The Roseland EP is just out and while only three tracks, reveals carefully selected new music for their fans, not merely studio leftovers. A follow up to 2023 album Metta World Peace, it’s their most poignant post-punk statement to date.
Ali Siddiq (comedy), Sept 13, Uptown, $30-$125
The stand-up comedian had initial success with his specials on Comedy Central, and in 2018, Siddiq decided to perform his comedy set in a Texas jail, bringing it full circle for him. It’s Bigger Than These Bars has reached two million views on YouTube.
Since then, Siddiq has released a series of comedy specials on his YouTube channel such as Don’t Judge a Book By Its Cover and his most popular series, The Domino Effect, both of which have been viewed by the millions.
Get Up Kids, Sept 13, recordBar, $35
KC’s own emo rock veterans are out celebrating the 25th anniversary of their beloved 1999 album Something to Write Home About. The band will perform the record in full each night, bringing along the Smoking Popes as support.
“Anybody can start a band when you’re 20 and go on tour and have a couple of years of fun with that. But what it became, at least to us, is the reason that we can still do this now,” vocalist Matt Pryor said in a statement. “We are doing this as a celebration, and we’re going to have a party every night on stage.”
Three Dog Night, Sept 13, Ameristar Casino, $40-$60
The legendary rock band is now in its sixth decade and has 21 Top 40 hits to its name, including hits like "Joy to the World" and "Black and White." In the years 1969 through 1974, no other group achieved more top 10 hits, moved more records, or sold more concert tickets.
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14
Cage the Elephant w Young the Giant, Bakar, Sept 14, Starlight, SOLD OUT
Cage the Elephant formed almost twenty years ago in Bowling Green, KY, and have been Nashville transplants for more than a decade. The eclectic rockers are undoubtedly one of the biggest grassroots musical success stories in modern rock. Anchored by brothers Matt (vocals) and Brad (guitar) Shultz, and with Jared Champion (drums), Daniel Tichenor (bass), Nick Bockrath (guitar), and Matthan Minster (keyboards), they found near-instant success with their platinum selling breakout single “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” from their 2008 self-titled album.
By 2013’s Grammy nominated Melophobia, they were touring with the likes of Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, and Foals (when we saw them) and had settled into a sound all their own, incorporating elements of psychedelic, roots, and blues rock.
New album Neon Pill, an introspective, mature, and retro influenced record and the band has continuously wowed us live with their energetic performances.
We also love famed alt rock outfit Young the Giant, the California-formed band in support of its American Bollywood release. The group is always entertaining live and features Sameer Gadhia on lead vocals, Jacob Tilley on guitar, Eric Cannata on guitar, Payam Doostzadeh on bass and Francois Comtois on drums.
British soulful and experimental indie and alt-r&b singer Bakar is also on the bill, in support of last year’s full-length, “Halo” and we caught this tour recently in Minneapolis.
Righteous Brothers, Sept 14, Kauffman, $67-$107
The legendary pair are embarking on their Lovin’ Feelin’ Farewell Tour and features Bill Medley, who has been entertaining audiences for more than 60 years and his iconic bass-baritone has helped earn their place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Take a journey through decades of timeless hits including "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin,'" "Unchained Melody," "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," "Soul and Inspiration," "Ebb Tide," and "Rock and Roll Heaven."
Hank Williams Jr w Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Wilder Blue, Sept 14, T-Mobile Center, $45-$350
Hank Jr.’s impressive resume has spawned 70 million albums sold worldwide, six RIAA-certified Platinum albums, 20 RIAA Gold-certified, 13 No. 1 albums and 10 No. 1 singles, in over five decades of entertaining audiences.
In 2022, his most recent album, Rich White Honky Blues debuted at No. 1 on the Current Country, Americana/Folk and Blues Albums charts, produced by Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. The 12-song-set was recorded live, reprising classics from Robert Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, R.L. Burnside, Muddy Waters, and more. 2024 marks the 45th anniversary of the release of Hank Jr.’s hit album and single, “Family Tradition”. Arrive early for the solid support acts.
Sublime w/Rome, Bone Thugs in Harmony, Sept 14, KC Live, $35
Ok, so they currently have no members of the original ska band and are embarking on a farewell tour. This comes after the founding members of Sublime announced their rebrand with singer Jakob Nowell, the son of original singer Bradley Nowell.
But they formed back in 2010 to carry on Sublime’s legacy and are even releasing a final single titled “Love Is Dangerous.” Rome Ramirez leads a band along with drummer Joe Tomino, bassist Brian Allen and Gabrial McNair on the trombone and keys, and you should hear all the familiar songs.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15
Robin Trower, Sept 15, Uptown, CANCELED
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 16
The Record Company, Sept 16, recordBar, $23
The three-piece blues rock band has already spent most of the year on the road supporting their latest release “The 4th Album” on their “Roll with It Tour 2024” which began in next-door Colorado, and is finally hitting KC.
The band came together in LA in late 2011 via Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and immediately had people take notice with their 2016 debut, Give It Back to You, with its singles, “Off the Ground” and “Rita Mae Young”. We like the covers they’ve released on previous EPs and the new album was preceded by lead single, “Talk to Me” and features new single, “Dance on Mondays”.
Live, they recently been working in covers from The Kinks, Johnny Cash, and even Beastie Boys.
