BATO BATO! Breck School Marimba Ensemble at at Lake Harriet Bandshell (02 Sep 2024)

The Minnehaha Bandstand is a little out of our way, it’s close to the airport, so that’s not really an option for us.
Instead, we decided to attend the Overdressed Duo at Water Works (at Mill Ruins Park), which is closer to us, and accessible through bicycle trails.
They have several programming, like “Simply Overdressed”, which is just the duo, Elizabeth and Carole, doing fun songs, including Disney. However, since the Summer is over, they mentioned that they have a very special guest appearing at the upcoming September 13 show at Linden Hills Park.
For our show, they were performing “Opera Under the Stars.” For this show, they have asked David Walton and Rodolfo Nieto to join them on their show. Walton is a tenor and Nieto is lyric bass.
As the duo explains, their goal is to make opera accessible to the general public… by taking their programming and performing in public and open parks, often free so anyone can enjoy opera and theatric musicals. Perhaps even turning young people into opera and the theater.
The “Opera Under the Stars” show is about an hour and a half with a 10-min intermission. The first portion of Act I is all Italian, and seems a bit hardcore opera. The second part of Act I was a little easier to enjoy, as it’s taken from Sweeney Todd and the songs were sung in English.
Act II was, in my opinion, a little better, as it seems like miscellaneous songs that they like. In the “Aria Off” section, each singer picks a song selection to perform. It ends with selections from Candide, with the song finale of “Make Our Garden Grow.”
As we previously mentioned, Labor Day was the official end of the Music in the Parks series… but the city liked these guys so much, they asked them to do a bonus, final show at Water Works again on September 9. So if you missed this show, there’s still time to catch them next week. Also, since it gets dark earlier, they’re starting the program at 6pm.
What started as two girls performing opera in their lawn, they’ve certain have gone far. If you like what they are doing, be sure to attend their Fundraiser on October 19, at Center for Performing Arts (3754 Pleasant Ave #220w, Minneapolis) to help finance next year’s shows.
