The Canadian singer’s strongest album, Stay Tuned!, was shortlisted for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize and had won the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2020. Now, with her most recent album Our Roots Run Deep, it won her second JUNO award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.
If you’re not familiar with the Dakota Jazz Club, it’s a restaurant that books live musical acts - mostly of the jazz variety, as their name suggests. It’s actually one of the best place to eat around town, and it’s highly recommended that you arrive early to get dinner before the music starts.
There was no opening act, so the Dominique Fils-Aimé started early. When you hear her speak on stage, it is a weird mix of Haitian/French accent. That’s because her parents were immigrants from Haiti.
She started the show with “Feeling Good / Feeling Like A Plant”, followed by the introduction of her band. She said that you don’t introduce yourself at the end of the party, right before you leave… so she likes to start her set by introducing everyone.
Between each song, she would recite lines, like poetry or self-help positive messages. It felt a little new age, but the audience didn’t seem to mind.
This was her first Dakota Jazz Club appearance, and based on the turnout, it probably won’t be her last.
