Nashville’s Free Throw recently headlined the new Green Room venue, in uptown Minneapolis, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. Although the Green Room opened in January 2023, this is the first time we’ve attended a show there.
Getting to the Green Room venue can be somewhat of a nightmare, as three or four blocks north of Uptown, the entire streets are missing due to road constructions. That meant that we can suffer the long one lane drive with no opportunity for parking, or find parking five blocks away and then walking the rest of the way. Once we got there, there was a long line to get into the Green Room. The show was sold out. They were letting in three or four people at a time, so it extended the time to actually get into the venue.
The venue has two levels, which does remind me a bit of the Fine Line Music Café. There were plants hanging all over the place, hence the name the “Green Room.” We didn’t make it to the second level, thinking it might be an upgraded (costs more) to get a better view of the stage… plus the venue was packed and it was hard to move around.
Opening the show was New Mexican born Chicano artist Slow Joy (aka Esteban Flores) with a brief 30-min set. He played tracks, such as “Pulling Teeth”, from his new EP Mi Amigo Slow Joy (out June 7, 2024, via Mick Music).
Next up was local favorites Heart to Gold. We’ve previously seen the band at their sold-out show in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Now, on to the stars of the show, Heart to Gold. I’ve been wanting to see a local band pull off a mosh pit with ease. A sold-out show at the 7th Street Entry with rabid/die-hard fans causing quite the scene and crowd participation. They even had a ring leader of the mosh that would climb on the pipes on the ceiling and surf back into the crowd. Fans would climb on stage and jump right in for crowd surfing, including the bandmates from Gramma on the encore.”
Finally Nashville emo band Free Throw closed out the show. The band is currently singer/guitarist Cory Castro, lead guitarist Lawrence Warner, rhythm guitarist Jake Hughes, bassist Justin Castro, and drummer Zach Hall.
The group formed in 2012 after the original members had just graduated high school. Singer Castro said they formed due to “a couple of beers” … and the rest is history.
Castro mentioned that the band has “deep ties” to the Minneapolis music scene, and indicated that the band have been in town plenty of times, if not for music, but for other reasons.
