It was another rainy day in a soggy summer. Luckily, I was able to reach 7th Street Entry without getting doused.
Mercury opened the early show. “First time to Minneapolis,” said Maddie Kerr.
From Franklin, TN, Kerr looked like she could still be in high school with locks of curly red hair hiding her face. She was excited to be on the road and playing with friends, even though they were reaching the end of their tour.
A band since 2022, they recently recorded in Asheville, NC, their latest EP Together We Are One, You and I. One of the singles “Born in Early May” was titled as such for Kerr was born at that time.
In her press kit it says that she was born to Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You” which may have been fortuitous for her voice has a wonderfully pure sound, lithe and lilting, yet powerful enough to rise above the symphonic levels of the three guitars on stage.
Dreamer Boy next took the stage as the band slowly appeared one-by-one to play their instruments before Zachary Taylor arrived in a leather jacket and straw cowboy hat with face makeup of a rodeo clown.
Taylor said he was happy to be back . His band was last in Minneapolis in 2022 opening for Benne at First Ave. This was his first headline tour (Summer in America), supporting his latest album, Lonestar.
The set had some punk. There was soft rock. One song segued into a little rap, but mostly it was the bedroom pop Taylor cultivated in his debut album Love, Nostalgia from 2018.
In between the songs were crickets chirping from the main speakers, a subtle touch, maybe to give the atmosphere of a summer night and a nod to the Lonestar state. But something was a little off. Taylor’s band members kept going backstage for their instruments kept breaking. Earlier, Mercury had the loudest feedback I ever heard when building into a crescendo, a giant POP almost fried an amp.
It was an off day, gloomy and rainy, and Taylor said he was feeling lonely, adding the sad clown makeup was circling back and making it all weird. But after a hug from his band and encouragement from the crowd, he rallied and even took a moment to sing a song laying down.
Maybe that’s what Dreamer Boys sometimes need to do.
