Woo! Three-day holiday weekend...but what happened?!
What used to be a great extended time to catch live shows and was usually anchored by some big outdoor festival like RockFest...is now somewhat quiet and almost begs you to leave town. Not sure what’s going on with KC music bookers and why the area is losing good shows to St Louis and Omaha (again), but something needs to change.
Those not out ot town can look forward to several decent shows below, the opening of Starlight for the season, the Busker Fest also returns to Lawrence, and lo siento, note that the Pepe Aguilar T-Mobile show is canceled. Here's the last week of May--
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from May 24th-31st.
(ticket hyperlinks are embedded in each show's headline)
FRIDAY MAY 24
The Mavericks w Hogslop String Band May 24 AND 25, Knuckleheads, $55-$85
The critically acclaimed band is back out on their “North American Spring Tour 2024,” in support of their 10th anniversary In Time deluxe reissue, which includes all 14 original tracks, plus the never-before-released single “Tonight Is The Night,” the group’s take on Glen Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind” and a rare conjunto version of “Ven Hacia Mi.” Playing multiple nights, as the diehard fans know, expect a different experience and setlist every night of the run.
Galantis, May 24, KC Live Power and Light, $25-$75
Galantis is aka Christian Karlsson (Bloodshy)and has been wowing audiences since 2009 (initially a duo; the other member, Style of Eye, departed in 2017). According to his website, his goal is to “evolve and push the boundaries of songwriting within the world of dance music and beyond.”
Galantis, David Guetta, and 5 Seconds of Summer have released a recent collab single, “Lighter.”
with his trademark metallic silver cat head mentioning 5SOS in every scene. Don’t expect those guests in KC but do expect some thumping beats and a dancing good time.
SATURDAY MAY 25
Me Nd Adam, May 25, Encore at Uptown, $15
Texas-based trash-wave mavericks Me Nd Adam released their sophomore album 'American Drip Part II', embracing a new musical identity. The project is both experimental and innovative, taking influence from the genres they love, but by no means letting them guide the unique sound they’ve come to epitomize. “ADP1 was an exploration; ADP2 is an expression of what we found. In ADP1 they [genres] were driving us; now we are driving them”, the duo explains.
Charlie Parr, May 25, recordBar, $25.49
Upper Minnesota comes down to KC as folk singer-songwriter Parr plays in town, in support of his latest and 18th studio release, “A Little Sun”. “Little Sun” shares its title with the nickname of the late Tony “Little Son” Glover. Before performing the title track, Parr often dedicates the song to Glover.
We see him frequently in the Minneapolis area- last year at the Lakeside Festival and the year before that, opening for fellow Minnesotans, Trampled by Turtles.
Pepe Aguilar, May 25, T-Mobile Center, CANCELED
SUNDAY MAY 26
MONDAY MAY 27
TUESDAY MAY 28
The Cher Show (musical), May 28-June 2, Starlight Theatre, $12-$97
Superstars come and go. Cher is forever. For six decades, only one unstoppable force has dominated popular culture-breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. The Cher Show is the Tony Award®-winning musical of her story, and it’s packed with so much Cher that it takes three women to play her: the kid starting out, the glam pop star, and the icon.
Featuring 35 hit songs, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy® and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage, it’s all in one unabashedly new musical that will have you dancing in the aisles! She also recently and finally is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (ceremony is this Oct) and the musical is so popular, it will return for one-night, next April at Lied Center in Lawrence.
WEDNESDAY MAY 29
THURSDAY MAY 30
Bodysnatcher, Spite, thrown, May 30, Granada-Lawrence, $22.50-$25
Metalcore bands Spite and Bodysnatcher are both out on their co-headlining Common Enemies Tour with support from thrown. Though they hail from opposite coasts, Florida’s Bodysnatcher and California’s Spite have found common ground in ripping their heaviness nightly, to roomfuls of rabid fans.
Arrive early for Swedish quartet thrown, fronted by ex-Grieved vocalist Marcus Lundqvist, who made a splash with their debut single 'grayout', via Arising Empire. Vocalist Lundqvist is joined by Johan Liljeblad and Andreas Malm on guitars, and drummer Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta/Humanity's Last Breath) as thrown aim to spread their message of self-loathing through their mix of gut-punching metalcore and anger-inciting hardcore. Mouth for War also scheduled to open.
Deep Blue Something w LYXE, May 30 The Bottleneck-Lawrence, $17-$23
In 1996, Texas alternative rock band Deep Blue Something hit the top of the Billboard charts with their hit single “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. The front man Todd Pipes and his brother Toby got their start in Huntsville where they grew up and played Lawrence semi-regularly in the 90s as their fan base grew.
Times and charts change but flash forward to 2014 when all five members reunited for a digital release of an EP called “Locust House” and they’ve been back on the road ever since, playing with the likes of Sister Hazel, Everclear, Spin Doctors, and Soul Asylum. We caught openers LYXE live during the holiday season end of 2022, opening for rockers Classless Act.
FRIDAY MAY 31
Jacob Collier, May 31, Music Hall, $27-$69
Maybe the most musically versatile player of his generation, Jacob Collier is on his biggest North American headlining tour to date to celebrate the release of his new album Djesse Vol. 4 (released February 29, via Hajanga / Decca / Interscope). Five years have passed since Collier embarked on the epic musical journey of Djesse, which began as an ambitious idea to make one massive album. Djesse soon erupted into an expansive four-part series that encompasses every genre under the sun, culminating in a grand finale that combines all the elements that came before – and so much more.
Through five GRAMMY wins and eleven nominations including Album of the Year for 2020’s Djesse Vol. 3, dozens of collaborations and hundreds of performances, Collier’s talent and imagination have continued to exceed his own heights and led his fans to expect the unexpected. Overall Collier is a 5-time winner and 11-time nominee, making him the first British act in history to win four Grammys for each of his first four albums.
From sweeping orchestral arrangements to intimate folk songwriting, and fusions of R&B, rap and pop, the multitudes of Djesse Vol. 4 are all centered around an ecstatic and global celebration of the human voice. In the midst of working on Djesse, Collier started turning each of his concert audiences into sprawling, improvised choirs. While conducting the crowd at rock clubs and Lincoln Center, droves of fans have all been united in harmony, furthering his guiding belief that everyone in this world is a musician. Having recorded each of his 80+ audience choirs, roughly 150,000 different voices play a role in the story and creation of Djesse Vol. 4. Arrive early for NYC alt-jazz artist Emily King.
