Drag City recording artist Azita Youssefi (aka AZITA), from Scissor Girls, opened the show with a music set. She played some songs from Year and How Will You?, including the title track, early in her set.
She apologized to the audience and recognized that most people weren’t expecting a music set. She even joked that her show is “Music for Comedians”, because Fred’s show is called “Comedy for Musicians”. Later on, she joked that Fred’s set is, “gonna be different, just a heads up.”
Azita ended her 30-min with a lively song, “Gotta Get It.”
Listening to Fred Armisen speak, you can tell that he’s been all around the world … but he has such a soft spot for Minneapolis. He truly loves it here… and I’ll explain: Armisen said “the music of my youth” was based in Minneapolis, such as Husker Du, the Replacements, Prince, etc. Then for nearly a decade, Armisen drummed for a punk band called Trenchmouth. They were signed to Skene! Records who moved their office to Minneapolis. So, he spent all his time in Minneapolis. He knows the city well, and he loves the city.
As advertised, Armisen’s show, “Comedy For Musicians But Everyone is Welcome”, is really jokes only musicians will understand. Since he’s primarily a drummer (although he’s clearly multi-instrumental), he listens to music through a drummer’s perspective. For example, his comment on Banda Music is pretty funny. Apparently, this type of Mexican subgenre uses percussion once in the song, and then you never hear it again. Or the weird half-start, half-stop drumming styles on Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” song.
My favorite part of Armisen’s show is for his grand “Accents From Around the Country”, which he would demonstrate and teach us how people speak in America. For example, the three distinctive accents of Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Bronx. Not only does he do a great voice impression, but he also demonstrates his keen observation of music from around the world (and later through the ages). He really knows his stuff, not only can he play different music genre, but he can also do it through different time period.
The Minneapolis show was the last of the tour… but if he puts on another tour, do yourself a favor and check it out. Maybe you’ll extra enjoy yourself if you’re a musician, but you’ll laugh just the same.
