It was a pitch-perfect night, weather-wise, in downtown Minneapolis. Megan Thee Stallion was at the Target Center. Across the street, Babehoven at Seventh Street Entry set to entertain a much smaller, but just as enthusiastic crowd.
Greg Mendez opened the evening by nonchalantly stepping on stage with the preshow music still in the main speakers. Quickly, the music and the crowd quieted to listen to his quiet guitar and vocals.
Menedez has been writing music since 2006. His fourth self-titled album released in 2023 has garnered praise with Pitchfork declaring it as one of the 10 New Albums You Should Listen to Now.
“First time in Minneapolis,” Mendez said to the crowd. “Like it better than Wisconsin.” He then elaborated that it may be due to the six-hour drive to the show. Being from Philadelphia, he said he didn’t really comprehend the vastness of the middle of the country.
After a few songs, Mendez was joined on stage by V who played bass and keys while providing vocals to songs that were brief with poignant lyrics that often ran counter to the light and breezy sound coming from his guitar.
Babehoven next took the stage. They are a duo of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert. They were supplemented with musicians on keys, drums, and bass to help translate their rich, studio sound.
“It’s our first headline tour,” said Bon. They are on the road supporting their second album Water’s Here in You, an album that was informed by walks in the couple’s pastoral setting in Hudson, NY.
Babehoven was last in the Twin Cities, opening for Slow Pulp at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in October of last year. They must have garnered attention for Seventh Street Entry was filled with many fans who knew their music, music described on Babehoven’s website as “...blending hyper-melodic indie and folk rock with shades of shoegaze and the occasional nod toward country.”
“What a great place to be - here right now,” said Bon, surprised by the crowd that was swaying and singing the lyrics. “I want to play here every night.”
Bon then asked the crowd to sing the final stanza of “Ella’s from Somewhere Else.” And so the crowd joined in:
You're my brother You’re my family You're everything to me.
Bon brought her hand to her heart in a gesture of thanks. “It feels good to sing music that hurts.”
