Mid-April already which means the not-so-fun task of filing those taxes, if you haven’t already.
There’s kind of a show lull around those couple days near April 15, but good shows to see, before and after.
We’ll make a rare WHM Recommendation to go see The Velveteers live, by any means necessary – the two drummers/one guitarist heavy grunge-ish trio are absolutely compelling live and (shhh!) have completely stolen the show when opening up for larger acts – worth the additional drive to Omaha and Manhattan KS, to see their other area shows as well!
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from April 12th-18th.
(FYI, ticket hyperlinks are embedded in each show’s headline)
FRIDAY APRIL 12
Natalie Grant, Apr 12, The Midland, $39.50-$59.50
The nine-time Grammy® nominated vocalist and her husband, pianist and composer Bernie Herms, continue to join forces on tour. Don't miss the vocalist / pianist pair together for an elegant, intimate evening of stories and songs. Some favorites are sure to include "You Will Be Found," "Your Great Name," "King of the World," "My Weapon," "Clean" and more. Note that reserved Floor 1 tickets include a 30 min pre-show Q&A and a VIP souvenir laminate credential.
The Urge w Six Percent, Apr 12, Madrid,SOLD OUT
The St. Louis punk funk rock soul band is back! They toured for over a decade with heavyweights such as 311, Korn, and Incubus and their three major label records on Immortal/Epic and Immortal/Virgin Records sold nearly one million copies worldwide. In 1998, The Urge scored a Billboard Top Ten hit, "Jump Right In" from their album Master of Styles. If they’re a fraction of as exciting as they were in their heyday, this one should be a fun and active night.
SATURDAY APRIL 13
Croce Plays Croce 50th Anniversary April 13 Kauffman Center, $61-$101.
See singer/songwriter A.J. Croce performing a complete set of classics by his late father, Jim Croce. Added to the mix will be some of A.J.’s own tunes, plus songs that influenced both him and his father. Jim Croce was an American folk singer with a short-lived professional recording and touring career and decades of posthumous fame as one of the greatest songwriters.
The show features a legendary band (including drummer Gary Mallaber, bassist David Barard, guitarist/violinist James Pennebaker) and a moving multi-media presentation accompanying Jim Croce’s songs. “The audience reaction has been so great,” says Croce. “The shows we did last year were not only met with a huge response, but I learned so much about what works and what resonates, we knew we had to keep going.”
The multi-instrumentalist says besides the two albums Life and Times and I Got A Name, tracks from the popular You Don’t Mess Around With Jim will also be part of the show. “We’ll be playing songs representative from all 3 three albums, and also some songs the audience might not know from more obscure artists that I realized connected me and my father. It was those songs that eventually led me to do this show in the first place.”
Slow Hollows, Apr 13, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $18-$20
AKA: Austin Feinstein is on tour in support of his new album Bullhead (out last month via Danger Collective). The album marks the first album in three years, following the band's dissolution in 2020 and features lead single “Idle Hands,” with a sound described as “characterized by heavy-hitting and booming slacker rock and indie rock vibes”.
Originally written for 2016’s Romantic, the song was shelved for years before being revived. “For some reason I kept thinking of this song and playing it when I was in the writing process for this new record,” explains Feinstein, “I figured it might be nice to muster up a proper recording. I ended up rewriting the lyrics and it feels like a thematic center piece for the album. It’s about being stuck.”
“Making a cohesive album was the most important thing to me,” says Feinstein. “Having some time away from the band made me realize what Slow Hollows stood for. It’s hard to realize what you’re getting at when you’re doing it. Making a sonic shift towards the sounds of early Slow Hollows records felt like something I needed to do for myself.”
SUNDAY APRIL 14
MONDAY APRIL 15
TUESDAY APRIL 16
WEDNESDAY APRIL 17
Godsmack w Bastian da Cruz, Apr 17, The Midland, $49.50-$129.50
The longtime Boston rock band (Sully Erna (vocals, guitar), Tony Rombola (guitar), Robbie Merrill (bass), and Shannon Larkin (drums) have accomplished 11 #1 singles at mainstream rock radio, including “Bulletproof,” “Unforgettable,” “When Legends Rise,” and “Under Your Scars.”.
Additionally, they’ve enjoyed 20 Top 10 hits as well as four Grammy nominations and were named Billboard Music Award’s Rock Artist of the Year in 2001. Selling over 20 million records worldwide, the band has released seven studio albums: Godsmack (1998), Awake (2000), Faceless (2003), IV (2006), The Oracle (2010), 1000hp (2014), and When Legends Rise (2018) and Lighting Up the Sky, (2023). This tour is intimate and mostly acoustic, so should be a special treat.
Wheel of Fortune LIVE Apr 17, Kauffman Center, $45-$79
One of the best known game shows of all time has been adapted into a stage show to give more fans access and more chances to win. Guests are randomly selected to go on stage* and feel like they stepped into the game show itself. The live stage show is the only way you can have the chance to spin a replica of the iconic Wheel. Contestants are selected from the audience to go on stage for the chance to call consonants, buy vowels, and maybe even solve puzzles to win fantastic prizes.
The host for this event will be Bob Goen, former Entertainment Tonight and Wheel of Fortune television host. Pat and Vanna will not be on tour. Wheel of Fortune LIVE! is a live touring production and will not be broadcast. VIP Packages are also available.
THURSDAY APRIL 18
Waxahatchee w Good Morning, Apr 18, Uptown, $30-$75
Aka Katie Crutchfield is coming back with her first Waxahatchee studio album since 2020 and KC is her adopted hometown, so come out and support! The new album, Tigers Blood, was released March 22 via Anti- and features lead single, “Right Back to It.”
Crutchfield made the album with Wednesday’s MJ Lenderman, Spencer Tweedy, and Megafaun’s Phil and Brad Cook. She wrote the album’s songs while on tour in 2022 and ultimately recorded the album with Brad Cook at Texas’ Sonic Ranch.
Regarding the new single, Crutchfield said, “I’m really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person.”
The Velveteers w/ City Hall, Black Mariah Theater, Apr 18, Bottleneck, $15-$20
The alternative rock trio from Boulder, CO returns with a thunder crash! Check out the times we previously saw them live and were blown away here! A WHM “Must See Live” stamp of Approval!
They started out when clips of the band’s live shows and DIY videos made it back to Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who invited them to his studio in Nashville to produce their Easy Eye Sound debut album, Nightmare Daydream. “I instantly dug them,” says Auerbach. “Any time you doubletrack drums on a record, it’s going to sound so heavy. Together with this baritone guitar player who is so bombastic. There’s nothing like them.”
BoyWithUke w/ hey, nothing, April 18, The Truman, $25-$55
The Korean American alt-pop singer, musician and internet personality, aka Charley Yang is out on his Lucid Dreams Tour, which shares its name with his fourth studio album, which arrived last October via Republic.
Arrive early for hey, nothing — the Athens-via-Atlanta punk-folk duo of 19-year-old best friends Tyler Mary and Harlow Phillips, who've built a cult online following through their roughly hewn and lyrically deft emo-folk. Speaking about new single, "The Sink," they said: "It's about the decision to let go — to fully break free from the chains of toxicity and trauma...a chance to refresh, let it all go, and move forward."
Jimmy Carr (comedy), Apr 18, The Midland,$44.50-$66.50
A longtime standup and well known on UK television, Carr is best known for hosting Channel 4’s “8 Out Of 10 Cats, 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and Big Fat Quiz Of The Year’” He has also served as a judge on hit BBC1 entertainment series I Can See Your Voice, and is the host of the game show “I Literally Just Told You.”
With a career spanning more than four decades, Carr has sold more than 1.2 million copies of his eight stand-up titles and is time-tested as a US success as well as across the pond.
