The group was really excited to play in the Twin Cities, with Dan Molad showing off his socks and said those were “First Avenue socks.”
Maia Friedman joked that it was a coincident that he wore them today.
Singing duties were shared between the three, with Oliver Hill taking the lead for the first song, “For George”. The band proceeded to play their first album, followed by their second album 2, including their single “Cora Lu” (a song about Oliver’s niece).
The band explained in an interview, “This one's a celebration of birth, dedicated to Oliver’s eponymous niece. More specifically, the song imagines the splendors of nature through the eyes of a newborn, appreciating the colors and textures of planet Earth anew. Wall-to-wall three part harmonies felt right, adding to a feeling of wide-eyed abundance. The bass melodica and wavery-voiced choir make us think of some unspecific VHS from our childhood.”
Sima Cunningham, from Ohmme, opened the show. She is joined on stage by her guitarist and husband, Dorian Gehring. She mentioned that she was only doing a limited number of dates with Coco (three dates), and the Turf Club was her last date.
This was also her first venture as a solo artist. She says she’s going for that “John Prine” sound... it certainly sounds like it with her last song, “Nothing.”
Maia Friedman later mentioned that both she and Cunningham had brought their babies on tour, and that they were sleeping in the venue’s green room.
