Falco wrote a a long and heartfelt apology: “Following an innocuous, fun rehearsal three weeks ago – during which, as usual, I wore ear protection – I’ve been plagued by various ear issues, tinnitus and apparent hyperacusis amongst them, and am totally unable to perform, barely able to exist in the world as we speak (the idea of getting onto a flight is particularly f***ing terrifying, and I’m not just talking about the vegetarian meal options). I have taken advice from ENT doctors, audiologists and my GP and have spent more money than I’ve ever spent on anything before trying to fix this issue but so far, no dice.”
It was all worth the wait, as the trio (Andrew Falkous, Jack Egglestone, and Damien Sayell) triumphally came on First Avenue’s mainstage and started playing “F*** This Band”, a slow song, about their band. You have got to love them for poking fun at themselves, “F**k this band, because they swear too much. It's an obvious ploy and irresponsible. F**k this band, f*** their holes, but if they split up, you’re responsible.”
That’s the thing about this Welsh trio, they’re a funny and smart post-hardcore, punk-ish, art-rock band. The band formed in 1996, and split in 2004. They’ve reformed for the benefit gig and, so on, but it wasn’t until 2022, when they announced the USA tour (a commemorative 20-year anniversary of “Mclusky Do Dallas”), that they were committed to being a band again.
So committed that they’ve released a brand new four-track EP Unpopular Parts of a Pig/The Digger You Deep in September 2023. If it all goes well, the band promised a forthcoming four studio album.
As you can see from the photos, Falco, due to his ear issues, had to wear soundproof monitors when he performs some of the louder and intense songs, like “Dethink to Survive” and “Without MSG I Am Nothing.”
Chicago’s Ganser (drummer Brian, bassist/singer Alicia, singer/synth Sophia, and guitarist Charlie) opened the show. The group played Mclusky the night before and decided to come up to Minneapolis to enjoy another show with the Welsh band.
The group has a very nice art-punk sound, and their performance was fun and full of high energy.
