Opening the show was “Florida Girl” Lydia Luce, with her guitarist Chris. Luce said she’s never experienced this kind of freezing 30°F weather before, and can’t even fathom what it’s like in deep winter. Of course, the audience replied that it’s actually quite mild this year (and they’re not wrong, it’s been a breeze this year!). I just think Luce didn’t bring a warm jacket, or layers of sweaters, for Minnesota. I often see this with many other bands, who are just not used to the drop in temperature.
Although Lydia is currently based in Nashville, she grew up in Florida, hence her title track from her album Florida Girl and other Floridian-themed songs and merchandises (which her husband designed). It just sounds like you can’t take the Florida out of her, despite hating to admit it “I grew up in South Florida and have always hated telling people that.”
Andrea von Kampen closed out the night. She brought with her violinist Jessica and cellist Nyssa (the bassist for Minneapolis’ The Foxgloves), who flanked her on the left and right of the stage.
They played a lot of new songs, including the title track for Sister Moon, which started the set. The album was a departure from her previous record label Fantasy Records, von Kampen explained the situation, “When making this new album over a year ago I had no clue how the release would end up feeling. My team had fallen apart suddenly due to circumstances out of my control and I was left making an independent record in a way I hadn’t planned for. It was stressful🙃. I went into the studio day after day and slowly the pieces started to rebuild themselves. In a lot of ways this album helped to remind me why I started making music in the first place.”
Prior to playing “Juniper”, von Kampen realized that her guitar’s sound was not working. There was no sound and they joked how they were so professional, no one noticed. They figured out that it was actually the guitar itself, so they switched to another one, with von Kampen adding, “Brett [her manager], have we got a guitar for you.”
After that incident, the show went on without any issues, leaving fans to enjoy a nice, quiet concert full of sad songs.
Andrea von Kampen’s Sister Moon is out now (released March 15, 2024).
