Ok, recent weather, I give up! It’s 80, then it’s 20, it’s sunny, then there’s sleet. Thankfully, we’re not quite ready for outdoor shows, so dress smartly just to get from car-to-venue. A good mix of shows this week, including a busy recordBar, some arena-size happenings, and great live theater – see you at a show!
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from March 1st-8th
(FYI, ticket hyperlinks are embedded in each show’s headline)
FRIDAY MARCH 1
Leo Kottke, Mar 1, Lied Center-Lawrence, $14-$40
The legendary acoustic guitarist and two-time Grammy nominee, with a career spanning more than five decades is back in Larryville, known for his finger-picking style that draws on blues, jazz and folk music.
His collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, Clone, caught audiences’ attention in 2002 and the pair followed with a recording in the Bahamas called Sixty Six Steps, produced by Kottke’s old friend and Prince producer David Z and they followed up with the 2020 collab, “Noon”.
Nina Simone: Four Women (play), through-Mar 3 Copaken Stage, Power and Light Dist, $49-$79
A living tribute to one of the most beguiling, effective and still urgent singers, Nina Simone: Four Women is an impactful night of live theater which imagines how the iconic chanteuse gave voice to countless Black women fighting to overcome stereotypes and racism.
It is September 16, 1963, the day after the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama and Simone is grappling with the shift of her career from artist to artist-activist declaring, “An artist’s responsibility is to reflect the times.”
Including some of her most popular Civil Rights anthems such as “Mississippi Goddam,” and “Young, Gifted, and Black” the KC Rep staging of this play examines Nina’s artistry and the women around her as their journey leads them down a path of discovery and healing.
Only a few chances left! - See our write-up here: Nina Simone: Four Women (runs through March 3rd) at KC Rep Copaken Stage, Kansas City MO (2024-02-16) - W♥M (typepad.com)
SATURDAY MARCH 2
Drake w J. Cole, Mar 2 and 3, T-Mobile Center,$144+
The 6 God is out on his It’s All A Blur Tour – Big As the What?, which will feature support from J. Cole. The original 50-date run last year was well received and the newest EP, Scary Hours 3, was released last November, the follow up to his eighth studio album, For All the Dogs.
Show up early to catch J.Cole, who has formidable skills of his own, and ahead of his years in the making upcoming full-length, The Fall Off.
Adelita's Way w Classless Act, Mar 2, Vevo Live – OPKS, $20-$25
The Las Vegas rockers are best known for their hits, "Alive" and “Invincible”, but also put out their seventh studio album, Power, last September.
Definitely arrive in time to catch the very Los Angeles band, Classless Act, who we saw live at the end of 2022, and definitely bring the energy to their live show. They’ve released an acoustic version of their debut album, and last Valentine’s Day they released their take on the Britney Spears hit “Toxic.” Classless Act is currently in the studio working on new material that will follow up their debut, Welcome To The Show.
Voivod, Prong, March 2, recordBar, $35.68
A return to a modern classic pairing! - Voivod, the Canadian heavy metal connoisseurs, recently released their latest album, "Morgoth Tales", via Century Media, The Orchard and Sony Music, a follow up to 2022 release, "Synchro Anarchy".
Prong’s thirteenth studio album, "State Of Emergency", was released last October via Steamhammer/SPV and frontman Tommy Victor outlined the stylistic direction of the eleven songs: "It's a very Prong record. I think it's totally genre-transcending and definitely ignores what's going on out there these days."
The album closes with a cover of "Working Man",the classic originally by Rush - "RUSH was the first power trio I ever saw live and I was blown away by them," Tommy said. "'Working Man' is so simple and it's so heavy. I also love the lyric. I thought it would be great tuned down a bit and slowed down, and I think we nailed it."
SUNDAY MARCH 3
The rising Los Angeles-based rock [Julian Comeau (vocalist/producer) and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail (multi-instrumentalist) ] duo has put out two full studio albums since their founding in 2020, with their latest release being “Picasso”, a three song project that came out at the end of September.
Single, ‘Addicted’ marks their first release of the year as Julian has explained: “It’s exploring the darker side of how it can feel as an artist, going into these rooms with big execs where nothing is quite as it seems. Feeling trapped, either by yourself or others, in a dream that can feel like a nightmare, which has a lot of parallels to the lyrics of the song itself and its themes of blame and self-sabotage.”
MONDAY MARCH 4
An acronym for “Los Angeles New York,” LANY consists of Paul Klein and Jake Goss and the pop rock pair have been around now for nearly a decade, and we’ve followed them the whole time, seeing them live back in 2016.
They’re back in the States for their ongoing “A Beautiful Blur” tour, coming after the platinum-certified band spent last summer in Asia on its “First The Moon, Then the Stars: A Tour Before a World Tour” before heading to Europe in the fall. They have three top 40 albums and popular collaborations with the likes of Kelsea Ballerini and Lauv with recent singles, “Congrats,” “Love at First Fight,” “Alonica,” “XXL” and “Home Is Where the Hurt Is” making some radio impact, especially “XXL”.
TUESDAY MARCH 5
Mamma Mia! (Broadway Touring) Mar 5-10, The Music Hall, $66+
The music of ABBA! The classic story we’ve all come to know and love after almost a quarter-century! A mother, a daughter, and three potential fathers, all ending in a joyous trip down the aisle.nm
Set on a Greek island paradise where the sun always shines, a tale of love, friendship, and identity is beautifully told through the timeless hits of ABBA. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the father she’s never known brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited decades ago.
The Moss, March 5, recordBar,$20
Starting in Hawaii as teenage buddies, Tyke James (vocals/guitar) and Addison Sharp (guitar) traded in beaches for Utah to join forces with Willie Fowler (drums) and Caiden Jackson (bass) to form The Moss.
Last January, the band released their Insomnia EP and the title track became a breakout single after landing on Spotify’s Viral 50 playlist and reaching #13 on the Alternative radio chart. Latest single is “The Place That Makes Me Happy”.
Jenny Lewis w Hayden Pedigo, March 5, the Truman, $30-$65
The party Jenny Lewis started on the Joy’All Ball tour (maybe you caught her recently on an episode of Austin City Limits) will rage on in this new leg of shows. The ex-Rilo Kiley singer has announced another leg of 12 dates, which includes KC, in support of her latest album Joy’All and will feature Hayden Pedigo as special guest.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 6
THURSDAY MARCH 7
FRIDAY MARCH 8
Flogging Molly w Amigo the Devil, Mar 8, Uptown,$49-$79
The “Road to Rebellion Tour” just kicked off in Mashantucket, CT, and runs through mid-March in Tucson, AZ and gladly includes a KC stop. We saw them bring the raucous fun of an early St. Pat’s last year at this time at the Voodoo Lounge, making any day an excuse to have fun and wear green.
For St Pat’s weekend this year, they’ll be at the Shamrock Rebellion festival, which takes place in Silverado, CA (March 16th) and then off to Las Vegas (March 17th) for the day-of shenanigans.
Sufrajettes, Mar 8, recordBar,$25.49
The retro female four-piece instrumental Toronto combo (guitarists Shermy Freeman and Nicole Damof, bassist Sarah Butler, and drummer Annie Linnis) has been making waves since forming in late 2015, charming audiences with their mix of psychedelic rock and reverb-drenched surf music, sky-high beehives, go-go boots, and eyeliner as thick as guitar strings.
Debut LP ‘Roller Fink’ dropped in April 2022 from Hi-Tide Recordings / Virgin Music and a trio of singles: ‘El Condor Pasa’, ‘Banshee Bop’ and ‘Marshmallow March’ / ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ finished that year.
Awakening Foundation announces the Hits Deep 2024 Tour, a 30-city run that includes two nights locally. Now in its 9th year, TobyMac will be joined by many of today’s Christian top artists, including Cory Asbury, Mac Powell, Tasha Layton, Jon Reddick, and Terrian. Bonus: Cheap Ticket Prices!
“Hits Deep Tour is my favorite time of the year,” TobyMac shares. “Not only do I get to see the people in over 30 states but I get to hang out backstage with some of my favorite artists. It’s a diverse night of music that hits deep featuring six different artists and their music. The songs people know and sing along with because they were played on radio, hit songs all night long.”
