Woo! Spring temps and one extra day--
Global warming and the jet stream could bring 80-degree temps early week, so it’s already patio season! And, that once-every-four-year phenomenon happens as well (no, not the Olympics, although they are this summer) - Leap Day aka February 29th is on the calendar this year and locally can be celebrated with a celebrated classic duo, or longtime celebrated folk duo, The Indigo Girls!
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from February 22nd-29th.
(FYI, ticket hyperlinks are embedded in each show’s headline)
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 22
Scotty McCreery, Feb 22, Cable-Dahmer Arena- Independence,$40-$130
On his Cab in a Solo Tour, (named after his recent single),the distinctive baritone voiced McCreery only recently turned 30. The Triple Tigers recording artist has six albums and numerous singles under his belt, but enjoys seeing his fans in concert.
“I’m on the road year ’round, but I always love putting together specific tours and I think the Cab in a Solo Tour is gonna be one of my favorites,” said McCreery. “Happy to have Anne Wilson join us on the road – she’s a great singer.” “And who knows, maybe I’ll share a few songs from my upcoming new album! I’m looking forward to it!” Anne Wilson and Noah Hicks provide support.
Samantha Fish feat Jesse Dayton w Sgt. Splendor, Feb 22, The Truman, $29.50-$60
The Kansas City native and local favorite Samantha Fish returned with “Death Wish Blues,” a collaborative album with Austin guitarist Jesse Dayton. Produced by the legendary Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the album is a body of work born from a shared passion for pushing the limits of blues music. It melds their eclectic sensibilities into a batch of songs both emotionally potent and wildly combustible and helps fulfill their shared longtime mission of opening up the blues genre to entirely new audiences.
Leanne Morgan, Feb 22 And 23, The Midland, $39.75-$69.75
The rising comedian, author, and actress has two nights in this rather large venue and has sold out most dates on this Just Getting Started Tour. Named one of Forbes 50 Over 50 last August, her huge year was decades in the making, with the comedian paving a unique path to success entirely on her own terms.
Crafting hilariously relatable stories, the comic brings to her work a rare authenticity, the result of a wisdom and perspective gained only with time, superserving an underserved audience. In addition to a new film with Will Ferrell and touring, Morgan is also prepping the 2024 release of her first book What in the World? (Random House/Convergent).
Nina Simone: Four Women (play), through-Mar 3 Copaken Stage, Power and Light Dist, $49-$79
A living tribute to one of the most beguiling, effective and still urgent singers, Nina Simone: Four Women is an impactful night of live theater which imagines how the iconic chanteuse gave voice to countless Black women fighting to overcome stereotypes and racism.
It is September 16, 1963, the day after the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama and Simone is grappling with the shift of her career from artist to artist-activist declaring, “An artist’s responsibility is to reflect the times.”
Including some of her most popular Civil Rights anthems such as “Mississippi Goddam,” and “Young, Gifted, and Black” the KC Rep staging of this play examines Nina’s artistry and the women around her as their journey leads them down a path of discovery and healing. We attended last weekend and found it to be layered and full of topics to discuss afterwards.
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 23
Mammoth WVH w Nita Strauss, Feb 23, the Truman, $35-$60
One of the best club show bills of this early 2024, Wolfie and band are riding high on their sophomore release, “Mammoth II” with this leg just opening the night before, in St. Louis. The band loves the general area, having played their first-ever proper gig in nearby Lawrence, and we caught them a couple years ago with Dirty Honey. See ‘em here before they go back to stadiums with Metallica in the summer.
Blazing guitarist Nita Strauss takes a break from playing with Alice Cooper (who we saw her with last summer) to support her own solo work, including recent solo album, The Call of the Void, which has guest appearances from almost everyone.
Ian Munsick, Feb 23, Uptown, $37-$50
Out on his Boots, Buckles, and Bolos Tour, the Wyoming Country musician released his second full length, “White Buffalo”, last April. He was one of our favorites of the weekend during 2022’s Country Stampede in Topeka and he’s only gotten more and more popular since.
Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Feb 23, Folly,$25-$55
One of our faves – we’re fans both of the legend himself and his weekly RFD-TV show. Stuart has spent over five decades captivating audiences with his heartfelt tunes, musical prowess, and dedication to the genre.
Stuart cut his eyeteeth early with the likes of Lester Flatt and others, eventually playing with the legend himself, Johnny Cash, in a friendship that would last through JR’s last days. Stuart is also a massive collector of country music memorabilia and boasts one of the world’s most extensive private collections. His dedication to preserving the heritage of country music led to the establishment of the Marty Stuart Center in his hometown of Philadelphia, MS a museum showcasing his vast collection.
Latest album is Songs I Sing in the Dark and his backing band remains one of the best – we saw them live several times in MN over the last few years.
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24
Jane Monheit, Feb 24, The Folly,$25-$60
A true jazz chanteuse, Monheit attended the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music, placed second in the Thelonious Monk (now Hancock) Competition and made a splash with her first several albums. Latest album is 2021’s “Come What May” and she continues recording, teaching, and touring, often with her husband, drummer Rick Montalbano, and their son.
Randy Rogers Band, Feb 24, Uptown,$30-$45
The longtime Texas country musician has nine studio albums in their 20+ years together, including their most recent release being 2022's "Homecoming". “I love being on the road,” Rogers said. “This morning I got up, I took the kids to school, and got on the tour bus — and I was excited to get on the bus. It’s still fun…I’m still happy to be out here doing what I love to do.” John Hollier slated to open.
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 25
Militarie Gun, Pool Kids, Spiritual Cramp, Spaced, Feb 25, recordBar, $20
The LA post-hardcore alt punk band has recently shared new “Under the Sun” versions of two tracks from Life Under the Gun: “Never F**d Up
Twice,” featuring Bully, and “Very High (Under the Sun).” Life Under the Gun, their debut album, came out back in June and followed All Roads Lead to the Gun (Deluxe), a re-release of the band’s two EPs from 2021.Last year, Militarie Gun teamed up with Richmond fuzz-pop band Dazy on the collaborative single “Pressure Cooker.” which also hit in a big TV commercial.
MONDAY FEBRUARY 26
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27
Gideon w/ Left To Suffer, Fox Lake, No Cure, Feb 27, recordBar,$20
The Alabama metalcore band leads this packed lineup of four bands and is still out in celebration of last year’s “More Power, More Pain” full length release. They started as more of a faith-based band but had become more disillusioned as time went on and wanted to include more types of people into their audience.
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 29
Indigo Girls, Feb 29, Uptown, $40-$60
Before they head out for a very busy Spring and Summer co-headlining alongside Melissa Etheridge and Amos Lee on separate tours, the duo are out for a few headlining shows. In part, it’s a celebration of a rebirth of their early hit, “Closer to Fine” that’s become a modern sing-along, as seen in the “Barbie” movie. Expect a full buffet of twenty songs culled over almost forty years of Emily and Amy’s folk tenure. We last saw them live back in 2015 on a hot July evening at the MN Zoo. It’s their Long Look Tour and Kristy Lee will provide support.
The husband-and-wife duo, Ben Sayevich, Violin, and Lolita Lisovskaya-Sayevich, Piano, will be presented at the 1900 Building in Mission Woods. Sayevich also maintains a schedule as chamber musician and is a founding member of the Park Trio, established in 2006, and is also violinist of the London-based Rosamunde Piano Trio. Lisovskaya-Sayevich, serves as Director of Collaborative Piano at the Park University International Center for Music.
