American singer/songwriter Melanie (Melanie Safka) has died. She is best known for her global hit song “Brand New Key.”
The song is about a skate key, so naturally, people refer to this song as “The Roller Skate Song”, even though the chorus brand new key is repeated over and over.
The song sold over three million copies worldwide and was featured Boogie Nights (1997).
I’ve only heard the song a few times on the oldies station, but her famous song came up when I saw Wesley Stace, and he had put together this weird variety show called “Cabinet of Wonders” show 2013. One of his guests, Haley Bonar, played a three-song set, one of which was Melanie’s “Brand New Key,” in which, Stace said was re-made (famously) into “The Combine Harvester” by The Wurzels.
Then, in 2022, when The Kids in the Hall came back, there was a bit they did about this sad DJ, who would only play Melanie’s “Brand New Key” over and over again.
