American alternative shoegazing band Blonde Redhead is back… and headlining the Amsterdam Bar & Hall, in St Paul, on Monday, October 30th.
Opening the show was Vermont-based singer/producer Lutalo (not to be confused with Ugandan musician David Lutalo). He was last seen opening for Claud in September 2023 and seemed to be a fairly active singer. You find out that he was born and raised in Minnesota, so being back in St Paul, felt like being home.
He played “PLPH” early on… which stands for Pretty Little Painted House … what is the painted house? It’s in reference to the White House.
He ended his set with his most popular song, “Bad Man.”
Blonde Redhead (singer/guitarist Kazu Makino and twin brothers drummer Simone and singer/guitarist Amedeo Pace) came on a sad party room, themed with helium balloon, and in very low light (often backlit).
It’s dark and it’s hard to see the band… and it’s the way the band wants it, similar to their last appearance in Nov 2014: “Almost every song had Kazu behind the keyboard or shyly playing the guitar in the background (usually shrouded in darkness) ... all except for their final song, "23", which Kazu stepped out front and center in the middle of the stage while confetti fell from the Varsity’s ceiling. “23” is my favorite Blonde Redhead song, and to see it end in such a fashion, was very satisfying.”
To be honest, I thought their tour for their ninth album Barragán in 2014, that the band broke up afterward. I thought it was all confirmed when singer Kazu Makino released her first solo album Adult Baby in 2019.
However, in 2022, the group toured with Tool (who actually played the Xcel Energy Center the next day), and after the tour, the group announced their tenth album, Sit Down for Dinner, via section1 records.
Like the last time I saw the band in 2014, they saved my favorite song, “23” as set finale… before going off stage and coming back on for the encore: “Here Sometimes”, “Not for Me”, and “Kiss Her Kiss Her”.
