November is here, which means chilly nights and the “Fall back” time change happening this weekend. In terms of live shows, it’s slowed a bit, but is still busy enough to deem it “Show-vember”!
Let’s take look at the Kansas City / Lawrence KS metro musical happenings for the upcoming week, from November 1st – 6th
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 1
Teddy Swims, The Midland, $32.50-$57.50
The genre-blurring singer-songwriter (aka Jaten Dimsdale) is out on his highly anticipated I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy Tour North American tour which got underway last month in Minneapolis and runs through the 21st in his hometown of Atlanta.
Latest and debut Warner Bros. Records LP is I've Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 1) which is the latest after his breakthrough Unlearning EP With more than 500 million global streams as well as a social following that exceeds 8 million, he' still getting going.
Husbands, Encore at Uptown, $11-$15
The OKC power pop/indie dance duo is out in support of latest album, Cuatro, which just came out October 13. They play the Midwest, before wrapping and doing a West Coast leg early next year.
Bluphoria w Noah Vonne, Replay Lounge- Lawrence, $10
Edgeout Records psych rock artist Bluphoria will join singer-songwriter Noah Vonne on the road on this co- headlining tour, which started Oct. 11 in Austin, TX and to run through Nov. 19 in Atlanta, GA, in support of debut self-titled album, so a it's chance to catch them early on.
TX singer Vonne released debut LP “We Weren’t Sober” last year on her indie label Gray Vonne Records in partnership with Vere Music / ADA. Vonne met and co-wrote her latest single, “To Do’s” with writer and producer, Cameron Olsen from Alt. Rock band, Weathers.
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 2
Terence Blanchard, Lied Center-Lawrence, $16-$45.
The 7X GRAMMY winner and two-time Oscar nominee performs movie music live-- With over 75 credits to his name to date, Terence Blanchard, renowned trumpet player and composer, is a music titan. His major scores include BlacKkKlansman, Da 5 Bloods, Mo Better Blues and 25th Hour: Eve’s Bayou,One Night In Miami, Red Tails and The Woman King among numerous others.
Blanchard’s ensemble, the E-Collective and members of the Lawrence Community Orchestra to perform.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 3
IV and The Strange Band in The Gospel Lounge, Knuckleheads, $25
A fourth-generation performer sprouting from the Hank Williams Family Tree- he’s aka Coleman Williams and band, whose debut album Southern Circus was released in 2022. New album Hang Dog will be released on November 17th, produced by Shooter Jennings.
Barns Courtney, The Granada- Lawrence, $25-$100
We’re big fans of the English singer-songwriter, with newest singles, “Young in America” and “Golden: and who is “currently in the studio perfecting a new body of work,” so expect to hear tracks from the upcoming album. His most recent album is 2019’s 404, which features singles “99” and “You and I.” We’ve been knocked out every time we’ve seen him live, including last Sept in KC.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 4
The Sound of Music Nov 4-12, Kauffman Center, $58-$218.50
The Lyric Opera of Kansas City Presents--
While she decides whether to become a nun, free-spirited Maria takes a job as governess to the seven children of widower and Austro-Hungarian Navy submarine captain Georg von Trapp. She quickly falls for the children and eventually Georg. Relive this heartwarming story of love, family, music, and triumph in a new large-scale production of a Broadway classic.
In addition to opening night, additional performances Wednesday, and all next weekend.
Aaron Lewis, Ameristar Casino, $76-$98
A Night of Acoustic Country from the Staind front man. See him unplugged and at his most personal as he returns to his country origins for an acoustic tour. Hear hits like Billboard's #1 Hot Country Song "Am I The Only One" and songs from his latest album, Frayed At Both Ends.
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5
Nurse Blake (comedy), The Midland, $39.50-$84.50
STAND CLEAR...Nurse Blake hits the road again with his new tour "SHOCK ADVISED!" Bring out your friends, family, and coworkers for an EPIC night as Nurse Blake shares new stories with a comedic twist of the ins and outs of being a nurse. Healthcare workers are going to pack the theaters so it's sure to be the safest place and most fun place to be!
In This Moment w Avatar, Uptown, $45
(Note that Ice Nine Kills is now off this date, choosing instead to open for Metallica this night in St. Louis instead – Boo!)
Grammy Award-nominated act IN THIS MOMENT has just released a new single, "The Purge", from its upcoming studio album "Godmode", just out October 27 via BMG. The song is accompanied by the official music video directed by Jensen Noen (ICE NINE KILLS, FALLING IN REVERSE, HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD).
Products, Howdy, $10/PWYC
Hailing from our Minneapolis stomping grounds, they’ve played together since 2017, inspired by bands like Television, Wire, Pavement, The Replacements and R.E.M.
In DIY fashion, they self-released both their 2018 EP ‘On the Dotted Line’ and 2021’s full length ‘Pink Puma’ as cassette only releases on their Bandcamp page. This Spring, they performed shows with labelmates The Poison Arrows as well as supported Deerhoof.
MONDAY NOVEMBER 6
Buddy Guy, Lied Center-Lawrence, $21-$60
You’re damn right he’s still got the blues- The eight-time Grammy Winner and Hall of Famer is out on his Farewell Tour, with special guest Ally Venable and has barely slowed down, now in his mid-80’s. In 2019, Guy won his eighth and most recent Grammy Award for his 18th solo LP, The Blues Is Alive And Well.
There are too many other accolades to mention, and Guy remains a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution. A must to see him live at once, and this may be a final chance on the road.
