Opening the show was Eliza McLamb, touring in support of her debut album Going Through It (Royal Mountain Records). She first came to fame during the pandemic, by producing TikTok videos (over 16 million likes). Her first single, “Ghosts” came out in 2020, and her first EP Memos, quickly followed.
McLamb is also a podcaster, known for co-hosting “Binchtopia” with Julia Hava, and spends time writing personal and investigative essays on Substack.
It sounded like this was McLamb’s first tour, stating that she’s never been to Minneapolis before on stage. She noted how cold it was here (even though the locals here calls it T-Shirt weather), and that she’s experience anything like this before, because she’s “from Los Angeles.”
They spent the day wandering around Minneapolis and went to Dogwood Coffee and said that they let her smell the sweet latte.
She ended her 30-min set with “Mythologize Me”, which is possibly her best song.
Last Dinosaurs had a full hour-long set. They had a lot of songs to play, and wasted no time in playing each track. According to their banter on stage, this was their first time in Minneapolis, or Minnesota, altogether. Last Dinosaurs seemed fond of the city, as they love The Mighty Ducks. The reference may have been lost on the very young audience, but yes, the Mighty Ducks are from Minneapolis.
They dedicated “Put Up With the Weather!” to Minneapolis, stating “you can relate to this song!” I suppose for outsiders the 40°F is very cold for early October.
My favorite song of their set was a medley cover songs, starting with Prodigy’s “Breathe”, followed by Daft Punk’s “Da Funk”, followed by Junior Senior’s “Move Your Feet”, followed by Modjo’s “Lady (Hear Me Tonight)” and ending with Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You.”
The cover songs should give you an indication of the band’s influences. Those influences can be found on their upcoming album RYU, due out November 10th, via Nettwerk. All the songs were written by Sean Caskey, including recent single “Afterlife,” and the newest release “Walking On Ice.”
Last Dinosaur ended their set with “Zoom.”
Platinum-selling Australian band Vacations closed out the night. The popular band has a string of hit singles, recently with the “Midwest” and “Terms & Conditions.” Every song they’ve released gets millions of streams and airplay. Their most popular song, “Next Exit”, has over 9 million streams and #1 on XMU.
The group prides itself as a DIY band, and “get-go” type of band. It was started in 2016 as a stagename for Campbell Burns, but he soon recruited band members Jake Johnson, Nate Delizzotti, and Joseph Van Lier, to join his group… to release their debut album Changes in 2018.
By 2020, the band released their second album Forever in Bloom on Believe Records. However by this time, the COVID pandemic, put pause on the band to tour to promote the record.
These Tourzilla shows are a great way to get word out on these two upcoming Australian bands to the American audience. Based on the young audience, it is working.
