Opening up the show was singer / songwriter / guitarist Towa Bird with an energetic set. The half-Filipino, half-English artist, was born in Hong Kong, but grew up in London and Thailand. There’s no one that looks and sound quite like Towa Bird.
Although she’s the first artist on the bill, you can tell this wasn’t her first rodeo. The way she’s handling the guitar, the way she’s asking for the phone flash lights, or the way she jumped into the photo pit to be closer to the fans in front of the stage… it’s all very entertaining.
After playing “Boomerang”, she tells us that she’s never been to Minnesota before, but she had a warm welcome.
For her new single “This Isn’t Me”, she asked us to pull out our phones. Even before asking for the flash light, the audience immediately knew what she wanted and turned on their lights. The song is actually about being in Paris for fashion week and no one there knew her. She explained in an interview, “Conversations didn’t feel authentic. Questions felt layered. ‘Who are you?’ felt like ‘Who can you be to me?’; ‘Where are you from?’ felt like ‘Why do you deserve to be here?’ (The answer: I didn’t feel like I deserved to be there.) There were celebrities, carpets, catwalks, and paparazzi. It was a paradox — the opportunity was so amazing and I’m so grateful, but I felt entirely alone.”
She ended her brief 30-min set with “Drain Me”, a brand new song that she promised will be coming out soon.

Alexander 23 is joined by drummer Tyler Matte, keys Petro, and bassist Giuliani. Alexander seemed like a really fun guy to be around with. Shortly after his first song, “Cosplay”, he was holding up Towa Bird, saying she’s amazing and “hot!”
The band had to cut “Crash” a little short because someone in the audience fainted. He stopped to show to let the Fillmore staff take care of the fan. “Everyone’s good?” he asks. Making absolutely sure they were fine, the band launches into “High School.”
Between guitar tuning, they were practicing their Dad Jokes. When they went to Chipotle, they ordered a small Diet Coke. “You know what they call that here? That’s a Minnie-soda.”
Don’t quit your day jobs.
Talking to a diehard fan at the show, she explained to me that Renee Rapp is on the cusp of exploding to that Selena Gomez or Justin Timberlake level, and, in fact, this current tour may be the best way to see her, before her eventual stadium tour. Take it from the words of a fan who drove from Canada to be in front of the stage.
Rapp’s setlist is divided into four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. And as you can see from the setlist photo, she also does schedule in a five talk. You find out, during these talks, just how personal Rapp’s songs are. Everything you ever wanted to know about her 23 birthday is laid bare on her “23” song. That’s when you realized why she has such a large fanbase, and why her tour is selling out (including the Fillmore show).
As that Canadian fan previously mentioned, this current tour is probably the only time that you can actually be up close to Renee Rapp. So, if you like Renee Rapp’s music, go see her on this tour. She stops in at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom, in Chicago, tonight.
