First night of the tour, and it’s sold out at the Genesis Owusu’s Fine Line show in Minneapolis on Thursday night.
Opening the show was Chicago, by the way of Nigeria, Godly the Ruler (aka Godwill Oke). Godly is joined on stage with his guitarist, Ehmed Nauman, who provided the music while Godly raps.
After “Off With Your Head”, Godly brought out his whistle, which he introduced as, “Say hello to my little friend.” (a reference to Scarface).
He jokingly asked what city he was in, and feign ignorance in what day it was. The truth is that this was his first tour, at least that’s what he tells us, and I’m assuming he was really excited to be playing in Minneapolis at the sold out Fine Line.
Australia’s Genesis Owusu is back on tour in support of his highly anticipated and acclaimed sophomore album, Struggler (OURNESS / AWAL Records).
Originally we were supposed to Genesis Owusu in Jan 2022, but due to COVID restrictions and other unavoidable things… the show had been rescheduled to the Turf Club in St Paul on March 28th, 2023.
So, it’s only been about six months since he was last here, and fans, who saw him at the Turf Club, also returned and with his music still fresh in their minds.
Maybe it was his single, “Stay Blessed”, but from the looks of it, it felt like Genesis Owusu was a preacher on his podium, preaching to the choir. In fact, if you look closely, there seemed to be a giant book.
There was heavy use of backlight, strobing bright lights, making it really hard to see Genesis Owusu’s red striped head or the three red stripes on his jacket. There’s a look and theme to this new Struggler release. For the second album, he’s exploring the struggle of life, while his debut album Smiling With No Teeth was about racism.
I wasn’t surprised to see that the show, perhaps the tour, has sold out, thanks heavy rotations on local radio station The Current, and Triple J’s naming his debut album “Album of the Year” and winning four ARIA awards.
