It was a night of gogo dresses but first, a T-shirt. In front of me as the crowd gathered was a fan who wore a black one and on the back embossed in white font were three words: GIRLS BITE BACK
Three words to best describe the performers of the Godless/Goddess Tour.
Pom Pom Squad opened the early all-ages show. They are a band from Brooklyn, NY with Mia Berrin on lead vocals and guitar, Shelby Keller on drums and Alex Mercuiri on guitar. They were joined on tour with Alina Sloan on bass.
Berrin shimmered with a silvery fishnet gogo dress that radiated through the first song “Lux”, which felt spry and spunky. And as a shout-out to the venue, they played the beginning sermon of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” before launching into “Head Cheerleader” a song from their debut album Death of a Cheerleader.
They also played a sultry cover of “Crimson & Clover” before Berrin reversed a current trend of throwing objects at musicians by tossing a dozen red roses into the crowd before finishing with “Crying.”
Pvris started the Goddess part of the tour by opening up their set with “I Don’t Wanna Do This Anymore,” which electrified the crowd.
Pvris pronounced Paris is described by All Music as “... dreamy electronica with dark, beat-heavy rock.” They are from Lowell, MA with Lynn Gunn, aka Lyndsy Gunnulfsen on lead vocals and guitar and Brian MacDonald covering most of the other instruments. Actually, it was a little difficult to see what he was playing for he was behind a mound of green bushes. (They were joined on tour by Denny Agosto on drums.)
Pvris is supporting their current album Evergreen, which Upset Magazine described as “... flecked with ethereal escapism and a resilient sense of optimism.” The song “Evergreen” most matched this description with a hopped-up reggae beat played on what sounded like an accordian.
The set switched from Pvris’ heavy, industrial side with “Monster” and “Dead Weight” to a more mellow approach with “Headlights” and “Anywhere but Here” which highlighted Lynn’s voice with a nice tinge of vibrato.
Then, the Godless part of the evening.
By the time Poppy took the stage in a baby blue gogo dress and pigtails the crowd had filled to capacity and they were there to celebrate at the altar of all that is Poppy. But first there was a prayer to assure the crowd that there would be plenty of love, candy, dancing and screaming, which immediately lead into “BLOODMONEY”, a song that gives Poppy the noted distinction of being the first solo female act to receive a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance (2021).
What is there to say about Poppy? Well, she is no shrinking violet. In the “BLOODMONEY” video she slams and throws quite a few extras/dancers with a series of dance/martial art moves. She is also an evolving performance act born out of the fertile mind of Moriah Rose Pereia who first made a name for herself by creating a popular YouTube channel that PoppyTV, which the producer, Corey Michael Mixter, aka Titanic Sinclar, described as “... a combination of Andy Warhol’s pop accessibility, David Lynch’s creepiness and Tim Burton’s zany comedic tone.”
Poppy signed on with Island Records in 2015 and already is releasing her fifth album Zig on October 27th. She even played “Church Outfit” from the soon-to-be-released album.
Like Pvris, Poppy also switched between hardcore to sweet pop music. In some songs, she combined the two musical genres like in “Scary Mask” where she oscillated between uncontrolled screaming to ethereal whispers and back to more screaming.
But it was the pop music laced with metal that brought out the thunderous applause from the crowd. And when she ended the set with the industrial anthem “I Disagree” it was with a roar from her and the crowd.
