Global superstar Dean Lewis kicked off his The Future Is Bright USA tour at the sold-out First Avenue in Minneapolis on Sunday night, having just successfully played Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore.
RIAA Platinum-certified singer-songwriter Sara Kays opened the show. She’s joined on stage by guitarist Anson Seabra. The two have collaborated on some new songs, such as “Show Me Off” and “Miss Me The Same.”
Her 30-min set includes a cover of Owl City’s “Fireflies”, which was extra special in Minneapolis, as Owl City (Adam Young) is from Owatonna, Minnesota.
She ended her set with “Backseat Rider”, “Bored”, and finale song “Remember That Night”.
The line to enter First Avenue to see Dean Lewis stretches around the block. It was so long that cars were pulling up and asking “what is this line to?” After fans shouted back, “Dean Lewis!” the puzzled driver answered, “Who?”
Dean Lewis is the most famous Australian pop singer that you’ve never heard of. His 2016 single, “Waves” was certified 7x platinum in Australia. By the time his music landed in America, for his debut album A Place We Knew, he was already a star and sold out headlining show the Fine Line Music Café on Feb 25, 2019. Unfortunately, due to extreme weather, his first headlining show was cancelled.
We did see him in July 2019, writing, “The late afternoon session proved a fine sampler for Lewis’s upcoming headlining appearance locally on August 6th with full band, and anyone admiring the emotional anthem-ness of singer-songwriters like Ed Sheeran and Vance Joy, are encourage to tune in and get a ticket to Dean Lewis while you can.”
It’s been four years of anticipation, but Lewis is back, this time with his sophomore album The Hardest Love (which came out in 2022), and fans are over the moon and singing along to every song on the set. Lewis was incredibly pleased at the strong turn out with so many dedicated fans… it’s a very good sign for the first night of the The Future Is Bright US tour.
For the adults, since most of Lewis’ fans are teenage girls, you can get away to the adult area on the balcony. First Avenue sectioned off the upstairs to 21 and over, so there were plenty of breathing room to watch the show from above.
