Seventh Street Entry was filled to capacity to catch the buzz of two bands launching a maiden tour with their debut albums.
Hello Mary first took the stage in front of the sold out crowd. Based out of Brooklyn, they are comprised of Helena Straight on vocals and guitar, Mikaela Oppenheimer on bass and Stella Wave on drums and vocals. They are young, looking like they could still be in high school, which is not too far off course for Straight and Oppenheimer just graduated last year.
Straight and Oppenheimer formed the band as freshmen, but didn’t start playing in front of crowds until the older Wave joined the group and started booking gigs to help her bandmates overcome the sheer terror of being in front of a crowd.
Although new to the scene, their sound is a mature one, informed by elements of grunge, shoegaze and 90’s indie rock. At times you can hear them calling out bands of that era like The Pixies, Veruca Salt and Modest Mouse.
The Alternative Press wrote about the band: “Hello Mary begs to be heard live — ideally in a gritty, 250-cap DIY club…” And Seventh Street was the perfect setting for them as they played songs from their self-titled release like “Stinge” “Looking Right into the Sun” and “Special Treat.”
Unlike the opening act, Blondshell aka Sabrina Teitelbaum had a few more hiccups along the way. Like Hello Mary, Teitelbaum grew up in NYC, midtown Manhattan to be exact. She also played in bands in high school, even one with Blu De Tiger. But when she moved to L.A. and started performing under the name BAUM it didn’t quite work. Sobriety and the pandemic allowed her to reset with a new direction and a new name and it has been quite a debut, receiving praise from Rolling Stone and the Brooklyn Vegan for her self-titled album.
“We finally made it,” Teitelbaum said when she took the stage.
We were set to cover Blondshell in January, opening for Suki Waterhouse at the Fine Line, but Mother Nature stepped in and stranded their touring bus in mounds of snow. But the wait was worth it for a crowd that sang along to snarky lyrics of “Veronica Mars” and “Kiss City.”
In her first show of the tour in Portland, Oregon The Willamette Week wrote: “Blondshell looks like the cool girl next door from head to toe. Her stage presence resembles a stoned high schooler dancing alone to their dad’s vinyl record collection…”
There is definitely a certain aura that is hard to define but still draws you in, especially when she sings lyrics like:
I know all about it
I would take a gun out
Put some poison in his salad
Wouldn’t be so bad
It wouldn’t hurt the world
Look what you did
You’ll make a killer of a Jewish girl
