Los Angeles blues rockers Rival Sons stopped in midtown Kansas City at the Uptown Theater, to headline a bill (supporting brand-new seventh studio album, Darkfighter) that truly showed the spectrum of today's rock n' roll.
The evening opened up early, with a thirty-minute set from fellow LA band, Starcrawler, in support of their third album, last year's She Said, and who we saw headline in St Paul back in late 2019. The indie rock band has some punk-pop undertones, with a Sunset Strip LA swagger and vocalist Arrow de Wilde proves to be pretty mesmerizing to watch. Not to be outdone, and without missing a chord, guitarist Henri Cash found his way up to a balcony box, to finish the song some twenty feet above the main floor.
We've been fans of TX psych rock band The Black Angels for years- their memorable in- store set at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis on Record Store Day 2013 and tour with the late Roky Erickson, being a couple highlights of their late decade-plus.
We caught them headlining last October in Lawrence, shortly after latest album, Wilderness of Mirrors was released and the band continues to create on their own terms, not at all feeling obligated to work in their biggest radio hit to date, "Don't Play with Guns". Vocalist Alex Maas remains even more enigmatic, baseball hat with the brim tightly pulled down and not saying much between songs, other than a pleasant thank you.
Though Long Beach, CA band Rival Sons have been around over a decade and a half, it seems like now turns the next big chapter in the band's evolution. New and seventh album Darkfighter was just released this month (via Low Country Sound / Atlantic Records) and its follow up, Lightbringer is already also in the can, and is set to release later this year. as the band will tour extensively through the summer, and then is off to UK / Europe for the Fall.
Live, they sizzle playing that familiar 70's influenced sound that would have found a home on Zeppelin's Swan Song label but have said they are as equally influenced by Prince, The Roots, and Van Morrison, as much as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and others.
The crowd loved the solos by guitarist Scott Holiday (many on a dual-neck guitar) vocalist Jay Buchanan didn't need to speak loudly at all between songs to get a rise out of the crowd, and drummer Mike Miley sported an infectious smile most of the evening, even more so during his own solo. And, though staying mostly serious on stage, the band clearly has a clever sense of humor, as evidenced by the wordplay on their own setlists (see pic at right).
A solid evening of entertainment that showcased several of the many facets today's Rock is - each sub-genre clearly influenced by the past, but fluid enough in the interpretation, that innovation is still possible in glam indie rock, Texas psych rock, and LA blues/soul rock with Rival Sons / the Black Angels / Starcrawler proving the point.
======
The Grammy-nominated California rockers are out on a spanning nationwide tour in support of their just-released new album, DARKFIGHTER, which came out on June 2nd and features new single, “Bird in the Hand”.
Just a few dates left on this leg, it’s set to end in Denver on June 18th, but it’s fortunate for anyone seeing these last shows also get to see TX-psych rockers The Black Angels as support, and who we saw headline in Lawrence last October.
Regarding the new single, “Bird in the Hand,” singer Jay Buchannan said, “There’s a lyric in there, ‘Let’s go down to the river where the water runs still and deep, to scatter the ashes of the mess I used to be.’ You can burn through a whole lot of time just trying to find your lane, your realized intention. At some point you accept reincarnation as a waking process. Build, refine and burn again and again and the lyric, ‘A bird in the hand, now that’s a miracle I can believe’ is the immersive commitment to the present.”
