SEMISONIC SETLIST DEL AMITRI Setlist Not Where It's At Read More
|
The spectacle that was the Last Summer on Earth Tour came to the beautiful confines of Starlight Theatre in Kansas City on what turned out to be a very pleasant evening after some earlier spotty showers.
Del Amitri got things started with a nicely received set from the longtime Scottish band, with hits "Always the Last to Know" and "Roll with Me" getting the most reaction.
Semisonic would follow, expanded from a Minneapolis trio, into a five-piece live version, playing their newest two singles, as well as older favorites. Many passionate fans were in the audience, whooping between songs and yelling for older classics, like the Trip Shakespeare favorite, "Toolmaster of Brainerd". They even worked in an Outkast cover and included "Basement Tapes", a song leader Dan Wilson wrote inspired by an early winter tour outing from Minneapolis to Kansas City.
Barenaked Ladies never fail to entertain, and the Toronto pop rockers played old favorites as well as a few brand-new songs. Between-song banter ranged from the official flag of Kansas City (not looking so much like fountains as much as err, woman parts), the unique connections their fans have with them, and how much fun we'd all have watching the sign language interpreters deduce all the lyrics of "The Big Bang Theory Theme" or the rapid fire vocal of "One Week".
And the show would end exactly how you would want it to-- with all bands converging back on stage for a loose, but oh-so-fun cover of the Steve Miller Band classic, "Jet Airliner" (complete with a Semisonic reprise of "Closing Time" to re-affirm that "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here"!
====
Still not the actual last summer (thankfully) those fun-loving rockers are out on their 7th almost-annual Last Summer on Earth 2023 Tour.
The Toronto-based eight-time JUNO winners and two-time Grammy nominees are playing three dozen shows in venues all over. We caught the first year live back in 2015 and have enjoying seeing the changing lineups ever since.
Special guests, Minneapolis’ own Semisonic and Scottish rockers Del Amitri will play extended opening sets, so arrive early.
