Kyle Thomas, or known by his stagename, King Tuff, is touring in support of his sixth studio album Smalltown Stardust (Sub Pop)… stopping by the Turf Club, in St Paul, on Saturday, April 1st, 2023.
Opening the show was New York’s Tchotchke (formerly Pinky Pinkyl from Los Angeles). The all-girls trio features singer and drummer Anastasia Sanchez, bassist Eva Chambers, and guitarist Emily Tooraen.
This was their last week with King Tuff, and they were sad to leave the tour. They recounted that they’ve been on the road with Tuff for what seemed like five weeks already.
As you can see from their setlist, they played songs from their self-titled debut album, which was produced by The Lemon Twigs (who they will support for the UK tour in May 2023).
Anastasia asked if there was a Sean in the audience. When there was no response, she said, “Then this song is dedicated to no one.” Then they played “Come on, Sean”.
“Wish You Were a Girl” is their single, and it’s the song how they wish this person was a girl, “tall and friendly, blond with curls… sensitive and insecure.”
Maybe it’s their first time in the Twin Cities, but they were curious if Minnesotans ever “get cold?” Anastasia continues, “I mean, it’s cold here and you guys get snow.” They are referring to the fact that we were hit with a snow storm the previous night, resulting in four or five inches of snow on the ground. While it’s uncommon to get snow in April, Minnesotans shrug it off as Nature’s April Fools.
They ended their brief set with “Loose”, a song not on the debut album and dedicated to no one, of course.
It’s the final stretch for Vermont’s King Tuff. After spending over a month on the road, the band looks like seasoned road warriors (but still impeccably dressed - even in Wizard costume as Kyle would wear near the end of their set).
King Tuff is basically Kyle Thomas, who writes and record all the songs for King Tuff’s music. When not in Tuff, he’s the singer/guitarist for Witch, and also one of the all-star Ty Segall’s backing band The Muggers, which we saw in Mar 2016, and wrote, “Before we talk about Ty’s exceptional musical output, we have talk about his all-star supergroup The Muggers. As we previously mentioned, his band consisted of King Tuff’s Kyle Thomas (dressed in an orange jumpsuit), singer/guitarist Mikal Cronin, Cairo Gang’s Emmett Kelly, and Wand’s Cory Hanson and Evan Burrows. With only a few dates on this current tour, the band sounded incredibly tight and well-rehearsed (even when they were improvising on stage).”
King Tuff, has been around since 2006, but it wasn’t until his official third album, Black Moon Spell (Sub Pop Records), that he gained popularity. The record featured Ty Segall as guest drummer on the title track, and took notice by CMJ (College Music Journal) and debut at #1 on Billboard Heatseeker in the “Hot Shot Debut” position chart. It was for this song that Tuff went downstairs to change into a special Wizard outfit to play “Black Moon Spell.”
As you can see from the setlist, most of the songs were mainly from Smalltown Stardust, which Thomas explained is “an album about love and nature and youth.”
These new songs were sometime played with the help of “Jim” (the frog on his keyboard). Before “Psycho Star”, Thomas ask, “Do you guys ever get seasonal depression? Great, this song is for you.”
