Opening the show was Nashville, by the way of South Carolina, Isaia Huron.
It was Huron’s first time in Minneapolis, and you can tell he’s not used to the cold in his puffer jacket and beanie. He’s by himself, seemed relaxed, and he had help from someone off stage, handling the pre-recorded music.
Huron confessed that he actually doesn’t have a setlist, but he’ll read the room to see what music he’ll play next. Most of his songs seemed to be taken from his album Libbie 02.
He described his music as “chill” and asked the audience to snap for his song “Self!”.
My favorite was “WOYD”, which Huron explained was a song he’s written for his Aunt for her wedding, during the pandemic. How’s that? It was a “Zoom Wedding”. So everyone was live on Zoom. I laughed when he criticized that no one dressed up!
He ended his brief set with “Mary Ellen”.
The room got really dark, and the fog machine started working overtime. Guitarist Pierre-Luc Rioux, violinist Lauren Malyon and drummer Maxime Bellavance came onstage with flashlight head band. They started playing music and Chiiild made his grand entrance.
The rest of the show was mostly in the dark with someone working the projection to display various colors and patterns on the band.
Where we were at, you can hear a group of women, who were singing loud and proud to most of his songs. They sure love Chiiild, and it shows.
“Back to Life”, a song featuring Zimbabwean-American singer and reality television personality Shungudzo, had the biggest response, while “Bon Voyage”, from the new album, also was well received.
As you can see from the setlist, half the set was dedicated to Better Luck in the Next Life, the album available from Avant Garden/4th & Broadway (Def Jam Recordings, Inc.)
