It’s a brutally cold, cold night in St Paul, and it’s up to Mike Dillon & Punkadelick to try and warm us up. The trio features xylophonist Dillon with pianist Brian Haas and drummer Nikki Glaspie. At first, you get the impression that they’re somewhat of a chaotic jazz ensemble, and as they played, you it starts to all make sense.
Dillon announced that they are playing their new record, Inflorescence, from start to finish… basically giving the audience a listening party, only with extra grunts and “yeah!”
The audience was somewhat older, perhaps some of them remembered Dillon when he opened for L7 at the sold-out 7th Street Entry show in 1993? He was there, of course, with a different band (Billy Goat), but he still yelled out, “Welcome to 7th Street Entry, Let’s GO!!!!!!!”
As announced earlier, the group played the last song, “Never Been To Paris”, complete with some weird mermaid siren vocal styling from Glaspie. With some time left on the clock, the band played “Drivin' Down the Road” to end their set.
Marco Benevento’s set is full of dance, psych rock… except “Dropkick”, the second song on their set, sounds a little too pop and a little too 60s. That’s not bad, the audience didn’t seem to mind, as they danced the night away.
This 2023 tour sees the band playing a variety of songs from their new album Benevento (Royal Potato Family). The studio album was written and recorded over the pandemic (2020-2021). Locked up at his home studio in Hudson Valley, Benevento experimented with different instruments (some old broken gears) and long solo jam sessions. The whole album was put together entirely by Benevento (who mixed and played every instrumental with vocals), with the exception of adding his wife and daughter’s vocals on some songs.
Anyway, drummer Chris Corsico looks like he’s ready to rock out, while bassist Karina Rykman (who replaced original bassist Dave Dreiwitz when he joined Ween) is all smiles, doing her head-banging on the bass. The group looks like they are having a good time on this tour, even if it’s about the end. Their last show is tonight, at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, Wisconsin.
Trivia: Marco Benevento and Mike Dillon are members of Garage A Trois, with Stanton Moore.
