Opening the show was The Brazen Youth to open. We last heard about the Connecticut band in 2018 when they released Primitive Initiative, somewhat of a followup of their debut album The Ever Dying Bristlecone Man. Back then, they were described as a recording project of Nic Lussier and Charles Dahlke with the addition of Micah Rubin in 2017.
For their 2022 live shows, the trio added Mei on additional guitars and John on bass. The band joined Flipturn’s tour since Kansas City, replaced Juice. The 7th Street Entry show was only their third show on the tour, and they seemed to be joying their time on the road.
The band was previously in town, at the Amsterdam Bar in St Paul with The Greeting Committee in Feb 2022.
They have two singers, Nic and Charles, who would trade off songs, taking lead when called for. After playing “Hometown”, the band mentioned that their favorite state, so far, was Iowa, which prompted the audience to say “booo!” instantly. There’s a lesson to be learned here…
Despite calling their latest EP, Changing, the band’s focus on atmospheric sounds and emotionally riveting, lyric-driven songs remains the same.
Prior to Flipturn taking the stage, the DJ/sound guy played nothing but Halloween music. Songs like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” to Boris Pickett’s “Monster Mash”.
The band features Dillon Basse on lead vocals, Tristan Duncan on lead guitar, Madeline Jarman on bass, Taylor Allen on synth, and Adrian Walker on drums.
Flipturn’s been enjoying selling out multiple shows on their current headlining tour. The reasons that singer recounted was, “People just discovered us on their own. They'd hear about our shows, they'd check us out, and they'd keep coming back. Our live show is the reason we've been able to grow.”
To back that up, over 10,000 tickets were sold to date, and major cities like Boston’s Paradise Rock Club to New York’s Bowery Ballroom to Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom were long sold out.
Flipturn’s debut album Shadowglow is out now Dualtone Records.
