Acclaimed Moroccan-Canadian singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Faouzia kicked off her very first North American all-ages, sold-out tour at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Saturday night, October 15th.
Opening up the show was Miami-based, Venezuala-born, 21-year-old pop singer Carmen DeLeon. All her songs on her set was in Spanish, with the exception of a cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” (which had the audience sing along).
For the first show of the tour, DeLeon was determined to have it all documented by a famous Tik Tok user (sorry I didn’t catch his name). He basically filmed the entire show on his phone, with flash and in vertical mode.
DeLeon was recently featured on Vevo’s DSCVR Artist, thanks to her heartfelt love song “Bésame Bonito” (via Capitol Records/Universal Music Latin Entertainment). Her English was very good, for someone who grew up in Mexico and would rather write and sing songs for her Spanish audience.
She ended her set with her English song, “Wonderful”, which sounded like a jaded response to Natasha Bedingfield’s “Pocketful of Sunshine” or Perry Como’s “Catch A Falling Star”.
Faouzia came on stage to a room full of screaming teenagers. Faouzia looked pleased at the sold out show, and said that it’s an honor to have Minneapolis as her first American show. You see, Minneapolis was her very first road trip with her family. She visited the Mall of America, so she has a soft spot for the state.
Most of Faouzia’s set featured songs from Citizens, which fans helping to sing along to the singles, like “RIP, Love” and “Thick and Thin.”
Faouzia first became famous at the age of 15, winning various awards. Her first single, “Knock on My Door” came out in 2015, and recently, she released her deeply personal single, “Habibi (My Love)”. It’s simply a love song, as Faouzia said, “to remind those closest to me how priceless and valuable their love is. I used the word ‘Habibi’ (which means ‘my love’) since it’s an Arabic term I use (as well as anyone who speaks the language) and it is very authentic and real to me.”
