Hip hop rapper Coolio has died at age of 59 in Los Angeles, his manager Jarez Posey has confirmed, with no immediate cause of death released.
He was found unresponsive in a friend's bathroom, but no drugs or related paraphernalia were reported found on the scene (note that he had also been a longtime asthma sufferer), so an autopsy and toxicology report will determine his cause of death.
AKA Artis Leon Ivey Jr, Coolio was best known for the GRAMMY-winning 1995 #1 single "Gangsta’s Paradise", which came from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film Dangerous Minds, sampling Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song "Pastime Paradise".
Born just south of Pittsburgh, Coolio moved to Compton, CA, going to community college and also working as a volunteer firefighter and as airport security, before pursuing hip-hop full-time.
His debut 1994 album, It Takes a Thief (Tommy Boy Records) featured the hit single "Fantastic Voyage", which went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
He was nominated for six total GRAMMYS and also won three MTV VMAs in a career that spanned thirty-five years, eight studio albums, and numerous film and TV appearances.
