Opening the show, and not previously known (at least to us when we put together the tour preview in August 2022), was Vancouver’s Pink Mountaintops.
This was awesome, as we previously saw bandleader Stephen McBean in August 2017 and wrote, “Stephen is also the singer, songwriter and guitarist for Black Mountain, a personal fav band of mine. He’s a metal head, progressive rock guru who makes you stare up at him like he’s Jim Baker waving us over to his cult to give up our lives…but in a really good way. He’s also proof that in these modern day, futuristic times we all reside in, you don’t need a bassist, drummer or backup vocalist…you can do everything yourself onstage with a little help from gnarly pedals, playback recordings and effects.”
By the time he toured for Peacock Pools, he had a full band with guitarist/vocalist Emily Rose (from Ty Segall,Mikal Cronin, and Emily Rose and the Rounders), bassist Kliph Scurlock, and drummer Tygh Runyan (former drummer for The Flaming Lips). However, for this Fine Line show, Rose is absent in the band.
Based on their June 2022 show at the Turf Club, I can tell you that they’ve changed up their setlist to be more aggressive/more guitar-focused songs. McBean did not speak at all, only letting his guitar speaks for itself.
Before The Afghan Whigs took the stage, their tour manager came on stage to asked us to not use flash photography. He added if you don’t know how to turn off the flash on your phone, you should call your grandchildren to ask for help. He then asked if anyone in the audience need earplugs, because “We’re about to see the f**** Afghan Whigs!” Drumming up excitement from the restless crowd.
The loudness is no joke, as we caught the band Sep 2017 and said, “No warnings were given as to the sheer volume level the band played at for their ninety-minute set, though most fans knew better and came prepared.”
Not only was September 9th the first night of the tour, but it was the album release for the Whig’s new album, How Do You Burn? (Royal Cream/BMG), which already had critics citing it’s the best Afghan Whigs album to date.
Band leader, Greg Dulli managed to squeeze in one of his songs, “The Tide”, in the middle of the set.
With the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II, it was nice to see the Whigs cover The Smiths’ “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out”, from the album The Queen is Dead.
