Starting the show was Lazenlow, a three-piece featuring vocalist Gillian Needham, guitarist Ghost Channels, and drummer Mo Bluntz. The band was slow to start their set, as one of their fans was late arriving to the venue, so they were vamping to buy her some time.
The group loves First Avenue/7th Street so much that they wrote a song about the venue… adding that it was written well before they first book their first show.
Friend Dog (aka Vinnie Donatelle) was up next. Donatelle was joined by bassist Lauren Anderson and drummer Nate LeBrun. Donatelle has built up a good fanbase, thanks to being in The Last Revel (the group is heading out on a national tour starting on August 21st in Livingston, Montana).
After playing a love song about his wife, Julia, Donatelle asked if the next one was the last song? He’s lost track of time and had forgotten to bring a setlist to the show. Anderson answered, “Six songs is the perfect set of songs.” With that, they played a song, “Never Want to Let You Down.”
The truth is, we weren’t going to cover this Flip Rushmore show. However, after running to one of their super fan, at a Japanese Breakfast in July 2022, the fan convinced us to see Flip Rushmore. He believed in the band so much that we had to trust his suggestion.
At the show, I see the local music fans/influencers (like Dom, Robert, the Girl at the Rockshow, etc.) in the audience, which is a good sign and indication there’s a good buzz for the band.
After a hilarious boxing arena introduction, Flip Rushmore took the stage, playing “Platypuseidon”, the new song about the murder of George Floyd, taken from their Choose Your Villains Wisely EP.
As promised, every song from the new EP was played live (for the first time), including billionaire spacing traveling song “Waxwing”, “NINE”, “The Loathsome Crowded West”, and “Gouda Bear”
Flip Rushmore’s Choose Your Villains Wisely is out now on all major platforms.
