Parking was pretty easy at the Coon Rapids Ice Center & Recreation, with plenty of overflow parking a block nearby. It’s a nice park and walk to the open field.
As usual with these events, there are some fun carnival rides, carnival food (think cheese curds and lemonade), games, and parade. It all ends on Monday, July 4th, with a giant display of fireworks.
We attended the Sunday event, which feature live band City Knights Band (misspelled as City Nights Band on the Coon Rapids website). According to the mayor of Coon Rapids, Jerry Koch, they originally didn’t have a band ready for Sunday. They had already booked Saturday and Monday. He talked to a local business Shortstop Bar and Grill, and they said they would provide a band, free of charge. The entire live music booking was thanks to Shortstop.
City Knights Band is a local cover band, and since they had to play for four hours (6pm to 10pm) they actually play three sets. Setlist three features more funk/R&B songs, but set one had more Americana feel (like a cover of John Mellencamp’s “Ain’t That America”), etc.
The band also lists “Alternative Songs”, which they can swap out to extend or shorten set… or if they felt like it.
