Australian musician Hatchie is back on tour, stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Sunday, May 15th.
Opening the show was Los Angeles’ Caroline Loveglow. She normally plays a 30 min set, but unfortunately, due to starting really late from the original schedule, it would seem she cut the set short under 15 minutes. That’s just the logical conclusion, it could be that she wasn’t feeling very well. I couldn’t tell, as she hardly spoke. She made one announcement, telling us the title to her song “Happy Happy”, and that the guitarist on stage with her was called Layne, her best friend.
Loveglow’s debut LP Strawberry is out now on 100% Electronica, and based on the brief set, it does sound a little electronica/dream pop.
Although most Hatchie (Harriette Pilbeam) fans came across the artist with her debut single, “Try” (which she played early in her set to some very enthusiastic fans in the front of the stage), she started her music career as singer and bassist of Babaganouj and Go Violets. We mentioned this in Sept 2019 and she played the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis: “Although she was still influenced by The Ramones and Tiger Trap, she wanted to “try” something different, and so she wrote “Try” in 2015 and eventually the song got picked up by Triple J Unearthed. The whole journey took her to meet her hero Cocteau Twins’ Robin Gutherie (who remixed “Sure”) and led her to being signed to Double Double Whammy and Ivy League Records.”
With Hatchie’s new album Giving the World Away (Secretly Canadian) out now and we heard the songs performed live, it would seem that she’s mixing shoegazing elements with a little electronica dance. She mentioned that she was inspired by St Etienne, and even Kylie Minogue, so perhaps Giving the World Away might be her most accessible album yet.
As you can see from the setlist, near the end of her set, she played a block of new Giving the World Away singles: “Quicksand”, “The Rhythm”, and “Lights On”, before returning to some old favorites to end her set.
