Classless Act hit the stage at 100 miles per hour, and they never slowed down during their set. Watching the high energy act on stage made me think of what it must have been like to have seen Guns N Roses when they first started and just really excited to show us what they got. It was no surprise when they covered GNR’s “Civil War” as their preultimate song.
Orange County-based rock band Joyous Wolf ( vocalist Nick Reese, guitarist Blake Allard, bassist Greg Braccio, and drummer Robert Sodaro) was the next act on this triple-rock show. They played a 40-min set, mostly from their Fearless EP. Like the title track, singer Nick Reese would run and jump into the audience (after using his universal hands-departing-the-sea gestures). That was definitely the highlight of their set, and whatever they played after, it never hit that high mark.
They ended their set with “Mother Rebel”, which requires the audience to shout back “Rebel”… as Reese does some amazing flips on stage.
American rock band Dorothy closed out the show. The band features vocalist Dorothy Martin, drummer Jason Ganberg, guitarists Devon Pangle and Eli Wulfmeier, and bassist Eliot Lorango. They became famous when Rolling Stone said this is a band “you need to know”, ranking them #14 on their 50 Best New Artists of 2014.
We caught them in Jan 2018 and wrote, “With an upcoming album, newfound sobriety, and a rapidly growing fan base, Los Angeles band Dorothy displayed their freedom on many levels, at a crowded Fine Line Music Café on a sub-zero night in downtown Minneapolis.”
Shortly after, the pandemic happened and put the band on hiatus … and they took that time in 2020 to write and record Gifts from the Holy Ghost. Dorothy said the album came to her following an incident where she witnessed her guitar tech die from a heroin overdose and then return to life, “I come out and see him and he's blue and green, and I knew he was dead at the moment. I just knew it, I don't know if anyone's had this experience. I'm pretty sure you know a dead body when you see one. [...] I'm just sitting there breathing and holding hands with my sound engineer. I'm like, 'Whoever's out there, just send him back. Give him another chance.”
With the gift of life, she was inspired to write the album and its companion EP Thrive in the Darkness. Hearing those new songs live, it’s not death and depression… rather a celebration of life and its lessons.
Dorothy’s latest album Gifts From the Holy Ghost is out now on Roc Nation.
