On their first appearance in the area, Los Angeles based Mini Trees thanked the audience for showing up early to hear them play.
We wrote about the band in July 2021, saying that it was Lexi Vega’s solo musical project, and they will be releasing a debut album on Run For Cover Records. At that time, we actually didn’t know the title of her album… well I would like to report that the album is called Always In Motion, and the band played songs from that debut album… including “Carrying On” and “Cracks in the Pavement”.
Many of Lexi’s songs are reflection of being a mix race of Cuban-born father and Japanese-American mother, and her perspective through her identity… never quite fitting in, growing up in suburban southern California.
The group ended their set with their first single, “Spring”, which they jokingly hoped that Minnesota could one day enjoy (it’s been an absolutely miserably cold spring).
Yumi Zouma (singer Christie Simpson, bass/guitarist Josh Burgess, guitar/bassist Charlie Ryder, and drummer Olivia Campion) closed out the show. The band had this great set decoration of fake plastic plants and a neon sign with the band’s name logo. Surround them were five LED light sticks that were magnetically attached to mic stands. The lights were controlled by a phone app, but it might have been pre-programmed or would sync with the music… it was cool.
The band started playing concerts around their city, Christchurch. They wrote music together via emails, since by some of the band members were not in Christchurch, around their early days. Cascine Records caught wind of the band, and signed them in 2016. By 2020, Yumi Zouma signed with Polyvinyl Record Co. and Inertia Music for the release of their third album Truth or Consequences.
This brings us to their latest album, Present Tense, which the New Zealand band played many of their songs, including “Astral Projection”, which singer Christie Simpson described as “about leaning into bad feelings and the mixed results it brings. Learning to sit with the reality of a relationship not working out as you hoped. Looking towards the future and knowing there will be others, there will be better times, but sitting in the present moment, trying to make peace with that.”
Since the show was on a Friday, the band played a little later and they played a little longer, than usual. In fact, even throwing in two songs for the encore.
