We actually didn’t know who would be opening for Good Morning, but was pleasantly surprised to see Canadian band Packs (aka Madeline Link) as opener. Originally the band (featuring Madeline with drummer Shane Hooper, bassist Noah O’Neil, and lead guitarist Dexter Nash) was known as Pax, but since I got Martha Washington thoughts, maybe it was better they changed their name to Packs.
The Toronto-based singer-songwriter was incredibly excited to be on the road and playing in America. It’s like they were just interested in traveling the world (and maybe play some music on the side)… or eating “burgers and sandwiches” in strange, new lands (Madeline even started a “Burgers! Burgers! Burgers!” chant).
Packs has an early 90s indie rock vibe… complete with vocal pedal buzz (at least when they got it to work). In the middle of their set, Madeline took out her custom guitar to play for us.
Good Morning came on stage to a large group of young teenagers (even though the show is 18+, many of the fans seemed to be under 20) packed together on the dancefloor. Even though the band looked young, and even though it’s their first American tour (first time in Minneapolis, “as far as we know”), you never got the impression that the band was amateurish. They seemed well practiced, everyone knew their positions, everyone knew when to move about to other instruments… I’ve seen seasoned bands that goofed/not ready for prime time… so it’s refreshing to see this young Australian band take their live show so seriously.
Good Morning is a duo, started by Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons. For their live shows, they’ve added drummer Joe Alexander, bassist James Macleod, and unknown keyboardist/extra guitar player.
The duo started playing music on TikTok and became instant rock stars. One of their biggest hit, “Warned You” got over 80 million streams. So many people listened and loved the song, including Tyler the Creator and A$AP Rocky… just to name a few fans.
Based on the good turnout (for a Monday) and seeing how many 12” vinyls they sold at the 7th Street Entry… I’m almost certain the group will return to Minneapolis (or as they called it “Dakhóta Land”) in the near future.
