Mercury Rev was originally the band to support BJM… but due to COVID concerns, they dropped out of the tour until April 12th.
Local psychedelic band Magic Castles (singer/guitarist Jason Edmonds, singer/guitarist Jeremiah Doering, bassist Paul Fuglestad, drummer Brendan McInerney) stepped in at the last minute to save the day. This made sense, as Magic Castles previously opened for BJM in May 2016… and we like band, as they were one of the few highlights at the Bathysphere: A Psychonautical Voyage festival in May 2013.
A lot has changed since 2013, apparently the band lost their flutist. Their music was discovered by Brian Jonestown Massacre’s founder/band leader Anton Newcombe… who signed the group to his A Recordings.
Songs on Magic Castles’ set were mostly new songs from Sun Reign and their previous album Sky Sounds.
Brian Jonestown Massacre took the stage a little later than advertised. This is a very large band, featuring singer/guitarist/leader Anton Newcombe, guitarist Ricky Maymi, additional guitarist Hakon Adalsteinsson, keyboardist Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt, drummer Uri Rennert, bassist Collin Hegna, and tambourine player Joel Gion. In addition, there are guitar tuners, and soundboard tech.
With all the players, and tightly controlled sound, the band creates layers and layers of psychedelic soundscape. Singer Newcombe hardly spoke throughout their set, instead letting the music speaks for itself. When he does speak, it’s usually to complain that his guitars weren’t tuned right (and that he has to take a few mins to get it just right before playing).
As you can see from the setlist (see photo below), most of their songs were taken from their latest Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees… which the band admitted that they were just itching to test out these songs live. Newcombe, quoted, “For me, live is where it [these songs] lives or dies. So, for me to get the chance at my age to go off on another world tour for two years and play bigger places, grand theaters, and be at the top of my game, it's an honor as well as a challenge. We are very excited.”
Brian Jonestown Massacre’s upcoming album Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees will be out in June 2022, via A Recording.
