Between the backlog of postponed dates and bands feeling safe enough to head back on the road, there are several nights this coming week that you will want to be in two (or more) places at once; and instead, will have to pick the show you want to see the most.
Area sports fans are somewhat upset that Tyreek Hill is now a member of the Miami Dolphins, so find some happy instead, at one of these great live concerts coming to the area.
(Despite some health mandates loosening up, several artists are still requiring for entry, so check with the venue and/or better to assume masks and/or vaccination proof are required)
Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City/Lawrence area for the Final WEEK of MARCH:
Night Club w Holy Wars, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $15-$20
Night Club is a Los Angeles dark electronic band, formed by Mark Brooks and Emily Kavanaugh in 2012. The band’s third album, Die Die Lullaby, was released Oct 2020.
Dark-pop openers Holy Wars are also from LA, formed by Kat Leon and Nicholas Perez, who covered Garbage’s “Only Happy When it Rains” on last year’s The Influence EP.
“Tribute to the Beatles” feat. Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Joey Molland and more, Kauffman Center. $49-$109
Beatles favorites and other classic rock 'n' roll hits performed by superstars Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Joey Molland (Badfinger), Denny Laine (founding member of The Moody Blues and Wings) and Jason Scheff (Chicago).

The Airborne Toxic Event w/Mondo Cozmo, The Truman. $25-$30
The LA alt-rock band that broken big with 2008’s “Sometime Around Midnight” has returned, in support of 2020’s Hollywood Park, an audio companion to front man Mikel Jollett’s memoir of the same name. Their fan base remains very loyal and they’ve replaced a few members since we saw them live back in 2013, but the core unit remains and their sound is often much bigger than the rooms they are playing.
Arrive early for opener Mondo Cozmo, a Philly singer-songwriter/producer who plays chorus-heavy alt-folk rock and is out in support of 2020’s New Medicine that featured single, “Upside Down”.

Girl in Red w Holly Humberstone, The Truman. $24.50-$50 (sold out)
Like everyone else, we’ve been talking about and anticipating this Norwegian’s live tour for the last two years. The KC show (like most on the tour) is long sold out, though there might be a slim possibility of last-minute tix released. The singer-songwriter (aka Marie Ulven) was buzzworthy before releasing her debut album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, last April with hit single, “Serotonin” still all over the radio.
Arrive early for celebrated UK singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone, whose major label EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin, was released in November. She recently won the Brits Rising Star Award and will join up as support for Olivia Rodrigo following this run, so this is a chance to see her close up and early on.

Bristol, UK country soul singer Yola is just getting started, though has already been nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2020, with two additional nominations this year, and was mentored by Black Keys front man Dan Auerbach. Her second album, Stand for Myself(produced by Auerbach) came out last summer and she played a sold-out Madison Square Garden last fall, in support of Chris Stapleton.
Opener Jac Ross leans a little more R&B, and released his cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” last month.
Hippo Campus w/ Ginger Root Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $26-$28
They’ve been Twin Cities’ favorites for years, and it’s only more recently than the rest of the country is falling in love with this peppy indie-pop/rock band. We’ve written about them for almost a decade, and first saw them at a local festival in 2015 when they’d already established a strong area following.
The band has been prolific during the pandemic, releasing the Good Dog, Bad Dream EP in 2021 and new album LP3 came out just last month.
Rittz and Grieves, more, recordBar, $25
This six-act Loud & Clear Tour stop features the Georgia hip-hop headliner, previously signed to Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label, and is in support of last year’s S.O.S., released on his own label.
Grieves is signed to fabled Minneapolis label Rhymesayers Entertainment, though based in Seattle, and had a new album, Canopy, drop last year.

Nation of Language w Glove, Ducks Ltd, recordBar, $14/$16
This Brooklyn indie new wave (OMD-inspired) synth band wowed us with their recent performance on Stephen Colbert and we caught the band live back in St. Paul in Oct 2021. They have a second album, A Way Forward to tour with, and also recently released a Broken Social Scene cover.
Glove (not to be confused with the Robert Smith/Siouxsie band The Glove) also have an 80s synth-wave sound, are from Tampa, and just released their first album, Boom Nights, last week. Ducks Ltd. are a duo and drum machine, whose new single, “50 Sheets of Grey” is their first music since debut album Modern Fiction.
Circles Around the Sun w Mikaela Davis, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $17-$20

Brand new jazz ensemble that cultivates new music alongside Kansas City’s fabled heritage of the genre. Note the venue change to the Medallion Theater in Westport.
Steve Aoki, Power and Light District- KC Live! $25-$50
We’ve managed to see this DJ/entertainer/entrepreneur several times live, but have somehow managed to escape without getting cake all over us. We assume this is an extension of his Neon Future IV: The Color of Noise Tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic, and features special guests Eric Coomes and Steve Serrano, confetti, lights, inflatables, and plenty of cake, cake, cake!
Jim Gaffigan(comedian) T-Mobile Center. $49-$109
Comedy that’s big enough to fill an entire arena-The Fun Tour is the latest outing from the six-time Grammy-nominated stand-up, actor, producer and author. Gaffigan filmed his last Netflix comedy special, Comedy Monster, at the (much smaller) State Theatre in Minneapolis last fall.
Vanner, Granada- Lawrence. $50
K-Pop! Formed in 2019, is this five-member South Korean boy band the next BTS? Spendy tix at least say they have a healthy following.
Animals as Leaders w/ Intervals, Truman, $28.50-$55
Wash D.C. instrumental progressive rock band, whose new album, Parrhesia, releases March 25th. Openers are Toronto-based progressive metal.

Baroness, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $60
Like many shows, this has been re-scheduled a couple times due to the pandemic.
We covered them last in 2016 and latest album is 2019’s Gold & Grey (on Abraxan Hymns Records), which they were previously set to tour with, but after a pandemic delay, are finally getting the chance to. The album is produced by one of our favorites, frequent Flaming Lips collaborator, Dave Fridmann.
Always over the top entertaining, the UK glam rock band still believes a thing called love and is out in support of new album, Motorheart. We caught them live back in 2015 and the band is also (somehow) keeping things family-friendly in this all-ages show.
Charley Crockett with Vincent Neil Emerson, Granada- Lawrence, $25-$30
Kansas City R&B Music Festival featuring Monica, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Tank, Jeremiah, Jacques, more, April 2, Municipal Auditorium, $89-$250

Barns Courtney, April 2, recordBar (postponed to October 30)

Wilderado w Flipturn, April 3, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $15
Florida five-piece indie band Flipturn is named after a swimming maneuver, has a new single, “Playground” out this week, and promises their live show to be a complete and total release of inhibitions, for band and crowd alike.
Nektar, April 3, Knuckleheads. $30-$50
Witness prog rock history as this longtime band (formed in 1969) is out on their Vinyl Sides Tour. We caught the band live, just days before the pandemic shutdown, and were amazed at their musical dexterity, loyal fan base, and creative longevity.
It gets a bit confusing with two incarnations of the band in existence (the other German-based version known as New Nektar) but we liked what we heard and saw from this lineup, and the band must have enjoyed their reception in Kansas City as well, returning to the area once again.
Naked Giants w Wombo, April 3, Granada Theater- Lawrence, $15-$18
Seattle alt-rock indies who we caught live in 2018 are back with new album, The Shadow.
Openers are a Louisville avant-pop trio who just released new single, “Below the House”
New Morse Code, April 3, Lied Center. $16-$30
cello/percussion chamber-pop duo, tix are cheapest with current student ID
