Opening the show was local Female-fronted genre-defying metal band Plague of Stars.
Long Beach’s Julien-K was up next. The band took their name from Julian Kaye (the character from American Gigolo). The electronic rock band was created from the ashes of Orgy.
After the release of Orgy’s third album, singer Jay Gordon had a fight with the rest of the band, and basically toured under the name Orgy without the original band members. Two of the original band members, Amir Derakh and Ryan Shuck decided to start Julien-K with their friend Anthony 'Fu' Valcic. You can read about the Orgy fight on Blabbermouth.
We did catch Jay Gordon’s Orgy in March 2019, and said, “Missing for a few years from the scene, Los Angeles industrial nu-metal band Orgy has returned, with not even a cast boot (the result of a foot broken during a recent move) could stop singer Jay Gordon (along with Carlton Bost– guitar; Nic Speck– bass; Ilia Yordanov– rhythm guitar; Ryan Browne– drums) from re-acquainting the crowd to their music.”
Anyway, watching Julien-K play live on stage, you can tell that all the years in Orgy, the band learned a thing or two about being on stage… they even closed with a cover of New Order’s “Blue Monday”, which Orgy is known for covering.
Part of the fun in attending The Birthday Massacre’s show is looking at their fanbase. Everyone is dressed in black, some in black bunny costumes, some in fishnets. What is even cooler is that the band’s audience is cross-generational, meaning today’s youth are listening to this 20+ year old band. Their music and message is just relevant today, as it was twenty years ago.
The Birthday Massacre’s latest album Fascination, the follow-up to their pandemic album Diamonds, is out now on Metropolis Records.
