Opening the show with a brief 30-min set was local country, Americana group Pit Stop.
One of the songs they played was called “Good at Being Alone”, which singer and guitarist Sarah Mevissen said that she cried when songwriter, singer, guitarist Jake Balistrieri first sent her the song.
We caught Mdou Moctar earlier in Sep 2021 and said, “It’s the third time that Mdou Moctar had stopped in Minneapolis. The singer mentioned on stage that he loves Prince and is always honored to come back. While talking about his influences, he also mentioned the next song is a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, which you can hear some similar notes from “Purple Haze” in the song. If all this sounds familiar, that’s because Mdou Moctar star in the musical Rain the Color of Blue with A Little Red In It film, which homages Prince’s Purple Rain and Jimi Hendrix.”
Of course, the Niger band loves coming back to Minneapolis. They played a solid set of mostly instrumental songs from Afrique Victime. The audience were all on board, clapping and hand-waving at all the songs. If the audience weren’t fans of the group before, they became fans after seeing this show.
New York’s Parquet Courts closed out the show to a dimmly lit stage.
We first saw the punk band in June 2013 at the Triple Rock Social Club, and described it as, “Out of Brooklyn, New York, headliner Parquet Courts, came on at midnight. The Tripe Rock was mobbed by this time. The audience was squeezed together to get close to this old school punk band. So awesome! Lead singer and guitarist, Andrew Savage, commented on the storm they just drove through to get to the Triple Rock, and was afraid that he had been blown into Oz after entering Minneapolis, so surreal it was to the band.”
As you can see from the setlist, they played a few songs from their latest album, including the title track.
Parquet Courts’ Sympathy For Life is out now on Rough Trade Records.
