It might be called the Young Guns Tour, but both acts played like old pros--
The year is still early, but the show featuring Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH looks to be one of the best co-headlining tours of the year, and they brought their collective musical might to the Uptown Theater in Kansas City, MO.
Both quartets played a lean, mean, and (literally) four-on-the-floor, hour-long set each, that gained fans from each camp that was there to see their own favorite band, both groups out in support of their respective debut albums.
Rotating slots, in Kansas City, Mammoth WVH began the evening at precisely the announced time, opening with the swirlingly powerful “Mammoth” from their self-titled debut (on EX1 Records) and band leader Wolf Van Halen shouting, “Lets go, Kansas City!”
The group has already tasted initial success, being Grammy-nominated and opening in stadiums for Guns n’ Roses and WVH has assembled an all-star lineup (Frank [Slash w/Myles Kennedy] Sidoris- guitars; Ronnie [Falling in Reverse] Ficarro– bass; Garrett [Tremonti] Whitlock- drums) to take his songs live on the road.
WVH made it clear early-on that he knew he was in Missouri, not Kansas, proving he paid attention while playing on that side of the river with Van Halen in 2007 and 2012. Album opener “Mr.Ed” draws from a 1981 VH sound his father used, and new single “Epiphany” represents the true core sound of the band, according to WVH.
While he exclusively played bass in Van Halen, in his own band WVH stuck to guitar with some light dabbling on the keyboard (similar to his late father), stating he brought the keyboard along “because I don’t want to play tracks” and emphasizing the “real sound” coming from both bands performing this night.
“I Don’t Know at All” is a new song that begins with a familiar sounding jagged guitar riff that was played mid-set, WVH confessed that “Think It Over” was his father’s favorite to hear, and when it came time to play a cover, people started shouting their favorite VH songs, which Wolf quickly shut down.
“You know I love VH- I was in the band, c’mon! Going to a Mammoth show and expecting VH, is like going to a Foo Fighters show and expecting Nirvana!” he replied as they launched into a note-accurate cover of Alice in Chains’ “Them Bones”, and their set would end with the encouraging “Don’t Back Down”, fitting for the trying times of these last two years.
We knew right away Los Angeles band Dirty Honey was headed to bigger and better things. The buzz was already palpable when we caught them live pre-pandemic at the smaller (and now closed) Riot Room and the band has exceeded those expectations, releasing their self-titled debut album (on Dirt Records) last year as a follow up to their successful 2019 EP.
A modern melding of ‘70s-era Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and Faces, peppered with some Black Crowes, the foursome (Marc LaBelle– vocals; John Notto- guitar; Justin Smolian- bass; Corey Coverstone -drums) had the crowd at their command from the beginning, opening with the new album’s first song, “California Dreamin’” and into “Heartbreaker” that had the fans singing the chorus back at the band.
Singer LaBelle rarely stood still, darting from end to end walking “The Wire” while guitarist Notto delivered killer licks on the “Fire Away / Scars / Take My Hand” medley. “Down the Road” (which seems like a good set-closing song) slowed things to a bluesy groove that found audience phone flashlights lit up and “Gypsy” was inspired by LaBelle’s cross-country motorcycle travels.
During New Years, the band found themselves in Minnesota for the NHL All-Star Classic game and debuted their swampy cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and hearing it live, Notto’s guitar skills especially shone during the song’s end solo.
On “One More Last Time” LaBelle sings, “One more go round, then we’ll say goodbye” but there was actualy still time in the set to include short but sweet solos by each member, including Notto working in part of Led Zeppelin’s “Ten Years Gone” into his guitar solo.
The set wound to an end with a ramped-up “When I’m Gone” (which went to #1 on the Active Rock charts) and LaBelle and crowd singing together, “Don’t miss me when I’m gone” and would finish with “Rolling 7s”, a groove-laden bluesy number about the protagonist betting on his luck with a woman. “Best crowd on the whole tour, and on a Sunday night!” Labelle raved.
Every few years, critics and fans lament the impending death of Rock music, in this age of electronic beats, auto-tune vocals, and changing tastes.
It’s safe to say that Rock is not going away anytime soon and is not only safe but thriving in the hands of the likes of Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH- two new(ish) bands that already play and perform like seasoned professionals with long careers ahead of them.
