We weren’t originally scheduled to cover this show, but the opening act, Midwife came highly recommended by a friend… so we decided to check her out.
What I can tell you about Midwife, aka Madeline Johnston, is that her music is extremely slowcore. She’s creating this music landscape with her ghostly vocals (amplified by her custom telephone microphone). Her music seems like it could work for a movie soundtrack.
She played a few tracks from her new release, Luminol, including the singles “Christina’s World” and “Colorado”.
Next up was Phoenix’s Holy Fawn (singer/guitarist Ryan Osterman, guitarist Evan Phelps, bassist Alexander Rieth, and drummer Austin Reinholz), their second Minneapolis appearance to date. They seemed really happy to be in Minnesota, stating that they love the cold weather (I guess anything is better than Arizona’s hot summer).
The band first came to the attention of many fans when Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and Thrice’s Riley Breckenridge raved about Holy Fawn’s debut album Death Spells in 2018.
Deafheaven closed out the show, coming on stage a little later than advertised. Originally a duo between singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, they expanded to a full touring band featuring bassist Christopher Johnson, synths Shiv Mehra, and drummer Daniel Tracy.
Although I described the band earlier as black metal, they sometime cross music genre into shoegazing territory, which some fans are calling the music genre “Blackgaze”.
Deafheaven’s latest Infinite Granite is out now on Sargent House.
