Brooklyn’s Nation of Language headlined the Turf Club, in St Paul, on October 5th. The trio (Ian Devaney, Aidan Noell, and Michael Sue-Poi) is touring in support of their forthcoming album A Way Forward, due out November 5.
The Wants opened the show. The band was formed by Madison Velding-VanDam and Jason Gates… and, originally with Heather Elle. However, Elle left the group to focus on her solo project, Flossing. For this 2021 tour, The Wants recruited Yasmin Haddad on bass, keys, and vocals.
I think the band is quite good, Madison was hypnotic to watch, as he does his best Kraftwerk mechanical dancing style and the band is focused. I supposed with over a year locked down, due to the pandemic, the band was well-practiced and eager to play their Container album… which bandleader Madison said was released on Friday the 13th in March 2020, via Council Records.
My favorite moment happened near the end of their set, when Madison accidentally did that “introducing the band” thing. He catches himself, “oh, we’re doing this.”
Since it’s been a year, the band had written some new songs in that time, and tested some songs in their set, so some titles on our setlist may not be the finalized title.
Nation of Language was very excited to finally play their songs. You see, their debut album, Introduction, Presence, was released in May 2020… and due to the COVID pandemic, the band never had the chance to bring those songs to life on the stage. So instead a handful of albums made their ways to writers and radio DJs. They had no idea if anyone would listen to their music, so imagine their surprise when they heard positive feedbacks. People were hearing their music on local radio stations, they were hearing it through indie publications, etc… so the band kept writing and producing new songs… which was eventually recorded as A Way Forward, their second album. So, with this tour, the band played a combination of old and new (future release) songs, as you can see from their setlist.
Highlight of their set was when The Wants’ Madison Velding-VanDam joining the band on stage to help play “Across That Fine Line”, which requires some guitars to give the song a fuller sound.
Their encore includes a cover of The Pixies’ “Gouge Away”, followed by the final song off Introduction, Presence, “The Wall & I”.
If you like 80s synth rock, you’ll like Nation of Language. After all, Pitchfork, Rough Trade, NME, Stereogum, Paste, Under the Radar, and many others, have already sung their praises.
